5S-FE oil change interval

Okay, I just took a quick look at the recommended oil change interval of my 5S-FE off of Toyota's site. It says 8000km (4970 miles) Does that seem kinda high to any of you? I'm used to an interval closer to the 5000km (3100 mile) range.

The interval of my 1MZ-FE is 6000km (3728 miles) which is acceptable.

ive seen people doing oil change after passing 23,000km....

8000km goes for any model after 2000.

one of the master mechanic from japan told me, you really dont need to change airfilter, oil filter.....but he's saying that becuz in japan you hardly keep a car thats over 50 000km on it.

Highway miles are less wear and tear on the car but I don't think that makes it okay to do oilchange at 5000 mi...

I do almost all freeway miles and I change my oil every 3000 mi. It comes out to about one oil change every 7 weeks.

If you guys are using synthetics like mobil 1, check out this Synthetic Oil Life study.

http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/mobil1.html

They took a car and ran oil tests every 1,000mi. They ran the same oil (mobil 1) for 18k miles! They're doing an amsoil test now.

Interesting results and recommendations. They recommend 8k miles between oil changes on cars that don't use oil. I'll be following VW's recommendation of 10k mi oil changes on my vr6, but changing the filter every 5k miles (adds about 1 to 1.5 qt of new oil at that change)

I'll probably do the same for my GF's gen3 camry.

Interesting to note that people doing 3k mile oil changes may be introducing more wear than people who run their oil longer.

"Engine wear actually decreases as oil ages. This has also been substantiated in testing conducted by Ford Motor Co. and ConocoPhillips, and reported in SAE Technical Paper 2003-01-3119. What this means is that compulsive oil changers are actually causing more engine wear than the people who let their engine's oil get some age on it. "

good post, alchu.
I'm thinking about changing to mobil 1 with my next oil change and sticking with that.

yeah I'm really appreciative of their study. it's important to back up reasons with fact, and 1k mile oil sample tests to blackstone labs is one way to get good numbers. Much better than the "it's cheap insurance, change your oil every 3 mos/ 3000 miles" That generates too much waste, esp in light of the other studies that confirm that 3000 mi changes are actually WORSE for your car.

I started using Mobil I back in 1974. The can actually listed a 25000 mile change interval. The car service people screamed and it was removed about a year later. It was originally only a 5w20 and I ran it in a 1974 Mercedes 450SL. It was too thin for the chain tensioner and I would hear it slap on startup but once running it was fine. I finally sold the car last year after 29 years of trouble free service. I changed oil and filter every 5K.
I should probably mention that the reason I even tried Mobil I in the first place was because I watched a technician putting it into one of the jet engines of a plane I was flying back in 1974.
