HID conversion kits legal?

I heard about the law about stopping aftermarket HID kits, but is there someway I can change my current halogen's into HIDs?

Is there a store online somewhere that still has a full kit for sale? or somewhere I can buy one?

There is tons of stores and resources for HID for any type of car. Search around the internet. I'm not sure about making them illigal. I know in some states they are illigal, but yet everyone still have them.

EDIT: Oh, and you can't make HID out of your halogens. HID bulbs are far different from regular halogens.

To answer your question, yes, aftermarket HID kits are illegal.

They were banned from further sales on 8/15/03. If you can find them at a local store, chances are, that store wont' be in business much longer if the NHTSA finds out.

it's not illegal if your car came equipped with HIDs, but your particular model/trim didnt...

if it was an option on your car, i think it's legal..

and it HAS to be the OEM kit..

curiosity speaking here, but is there any way I could get the backing from a projector light outfitted for my halogens?

I like the clear-cased headlight look, but don't want to spend the $$ for HID's nor really need the brightness (I'm quite happy with my 9005 silverstars).

^^ NO!

The thing is 80% of the people wanting HID's on their non HID headlamps just want the look w/o thinking twice about the glare. Its the glare that made them illegal..cus it blinds others. The other 20% do it right....
If u take all the precautions on your halogen housing to prevent glare (casper's, hid reflectors) your at least a step ahead of those plug&play ebay thingies.....Everyone suggests projectors...yeah those things are sweet...but not all people have surgical hands for diy jobs and not no all afford that....

i'm still kind of curious. would it be possible to use an HID light-backing (metallic reflecter-looking part) with halogens?

I'm trying to figure out how I could clear out my lights without moving to HID's (way too expensive).

Again, this is more curiosity than anything speaking, so there's no real urgency to respond.

the only thing i could think of that might actually act like a projector, is sort of a spherical housing, with a hole proportionatly smaller than the circumference of the sphere, so it'll all be concentrated, but i'm not sure if the light would dissipate after leaving the spherical housing...

if this works...

PATENT PENDING..!!!

You'll have to let us know if you do this and it works. I would love the clear headlights but I don't wanna spend the big bucks on HID, I love my 9005 silverstars.

Same, and I'm not willing to blind opposing traffic and lose directionality of light.

I really just want the clear lenses, but I don't want to blind people.

I do believe the Mercury Cougar comes with 9005 halogen projectors, though correct me if I'm wrong.

If you can get your hands on a pair of those, which I can't imagine would be extremely difficult, and you're good with a dremeling tool, then by all means, I'd say screw the reflector base and retrofit halogen projectors into your housing.

Try the Hyundai Tiburon/Acura Integra as those come with 9006 halogen projectors... you could retrofit those and do the 9006-9005 bulb conversion (which it sounds like you've already done) and voila! You've got a nicer beam pattern and didn't have to spend a whole lot of $$$ on a HID retrofit
