Question Timing belt replacement questions

I have '93 Camry LE V6. It has now about 162000km.
I bought this car used and judging by a note on the engine bay, the timing belt was last changed at 77000km.

Here are my questions:

1.) Are there any advantages to having this job done by Toyota rather any other repair shop? Im thinking that this may a compliated job and is more suited for Toyota technicians who likely have more experience with this. What you think?

2.) How much should this repair cost? What other parts should I change along with the timing belt?

Thanks for your help!

Cam seals, crank seal, water pump and the idler pulleys for timing belt.

These parts from the dealer will be costly. Personally I'd source all but the belt from a reputable local parts store and get the belt from the dealer.
If you're paying to have it done just let the shop you choose get the parts and request an OEM belt. Check the warranties between the local shops and the dealer. If they have similar time period warranties then I'd go with a reputable local mechanics shop that will prolly have a lower hourly fee than the dealer.
Our shop has a very low turn-over rate, meaning we don't just hire any jack-leg that strolls up. The main tech at our shop has been there for 9 years and he's the lowest on the pole in seniority with the only exception being the boss' son. I've been there over 15 years.

The advantage to going to the dealer is knowing that you're getting dealer parts and that they probably won't make a mistake since they are doing the same thing everyday. A local shop will use the most inexpensive belts, goodyear belts are ok though. It is a good idea to have your waterpump, pulleys and tensioners replaced the second time doing the timing belt. It is also a good time to change any cam/crank seal leaks that might be present. Also the serpentine belts are coming off to get to the timing belt so as preventative maintainence you should have those changed if they are old. It calls for 4 hours if I can remember right to change the belt. and 2/10s of an hour for each cam/crank seal, and additional half hour labor to change waterpump. Dealer list on waterpump is around 90 us dollars. The belt isn't that much- no more than 30 dollars. Not too sure about the pulleys/tensioner. I know that there is a company that sells a timing belt kit which includes the belt, pulleys, and tensioner. I believe its around 60-70 dollars.

I don't know about the V6, but I just did this job to my 3SGTE that I'm swapping in. The belt at the dealer was $39 shop cost, the 2 idlers(one was the tensioner idler) were $80 for one and $140 for the other. I got my seals from the dealer and guess what? They had a common USA manufacture's name on them, same as what the parts store had.

Frankly speaking replacing a timing belt on a Camry is not that difficult (on some cars it can be a nightmare). I'm sure any mechanic can do it without any problems

Haha I find that ironic. I took apart a 5S-FE last summer and the timing belt was a nightmare...so I cut it, and still couldn't get it out. lol so I just mutilated the cover and took off all the bolts I could Luckily there were no intentions ever of reconstruction!

What brand to get for Idler pully, tensioner pully

Hello Tercel GTS:

You said "I got my seals from the dealer and guess what? They had a common USA manufacture's name on them, same as what the parts store had."

Who are the manufacturer? I am going to change mine, but there are so many brands of idler tensioner pullies out there. I have read people posted Beck/Arnley as low quality products.

I am getting the Mitshuboshi belt , which is an OEM manufactuer from online store for a lot cheaper. Already got Water pump($90!), Crank Seal & Cam seal from a dealer. But I don't know who makes idler tensioner pullies.

Is GMB a good brand? Any recommended seller in e-bay?

My timing belt broke on my 2003 Toyota Camry. What kind of damage may have it have caused? What will it likely cost me?

USA to ttalli03

I believe it depends on if it's an interference engine, which yours should not be. Check this site out: http://www.aa1car.com/library/timing...ce_engines.htm

As for the cost, I am getting mine replaced just to do it. It's going to cost me around $160 in parts and I found someone to do it for me for $100. If you take it to a Toyota dealer, I would expect it to be around $500 with the tensioners, water pump, etc.
