Does anyone know if a shift know would work in a gen2 Camry? I found one with the O/D button, but my shifter has a push button on the side which you have to push in to get out of park. Would the automatic shift knob even work because of this?

Your stock automatic shift knob can be replaced with any aftermkt shifter designed for an automatic. The only thing you need to worry about is the O/D switch. Most aftermkt auto shifters don't have O/D buttons. If this is the case, you can make your own simple "on/off" switch. Alternatively, you can get an aftermkt auto shifter with an OD button. However, be prepared to empty your wallet.

Phi's right, pretty much any automatic shifter will work on your auto, as long as it will fit on your shifter. It doesn't matter where the button sits...almost every automatic shifter is side button activated (except the cooler auto shifters!)...when you push your thumb in, it pushes the rod down.

Posting here, to prevent a new thread

I searched through some older auto shift knob threads for the gen 2 cam. I recently bought a ractive knob that has a round end to screw on or slide on somehow. I was fooling around with the shifter today and as you prob know the stalk is somewhat rounded rectangular...

What can I do to fit it on?

Dremel tool

That's a lot of grinding though, cause that's hardened steel if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah. Just use a grinding bit and try to make it as round as possible. It may take a little while. Spread a towel around the shifter and tape it to the stalk to catch the ground up bits, cause they'll be everywhere.

Keep in mind this will possibly screw you if you want to install a knob that's matched to fit the rectangular shape; it'll be wobbly and stuff. Plus, you may have to put some kind of tape or spacer on there to keep the new knob from being wobbly if you take too much off... Do lots of test fits, I suppose.

I'm thinking if I can just cut grooves on the front and backside of the stalk, then I can screw it on. I don't know how to get started though, since I don't have a dremel =/.

I noticed you used a cuttin die to change your thread pattern, I guess I need to actually make a thread first

I fiddled with it, and broke the O/D button today, so now O/D is always off until I fix it with another switch somewhere.

This might be more difficult than it's worth

Shifter w/OD install pics

well here u go guys.. hope this helps (sorry about the blurry pics)

it was pretty easy, the only real tough thing was cutting down the shaft in the limited space with a large hacksaw.. so needless to say it took a little while..

oh and the Levoc had an adapter on the inner shaft so that either an oval or round shaft could use this shifter... so you should be all good no matter what shape your gen's shaft is

here are the two screws you have to unscrew first. they are facing the dash side.

when they are unscrewed, just yank it straight up and it should come off in your hands.. you'll have to yank hard cuz of the O/D wires. if you want you can cut the OD wires if you plan on ever putting the OEM shifter back on for some reason.

this is the inner and outer shaft with the shifter off (notice the OD wires sticking out)

heres the Levoc shifter i got ($80USD expensive, i know)

now i know why they said to use a pipe cutter.. my friend washed his car and finished, and i was still cutting the shafts with the hacksaw..
but heres the outer shaft cut down, i took off about 2.5 inches

2.5 off the inner shaft..

connect the OD wires with the one from the shifter, and test the button. if you don't want it to engage at that position, then switch the wires around.

drop the shifter down onto the shaft, and heres the new shifter in place, sorry about the blurry-ness. to attach it to the shaft, you have all the hardware you need. screws, allen wrenches, etc should all come with the shifter. this is where you may need to actually use the instructions

one other thing about the levoc too, it comes with a plastic shaft that goes over the metal shaft. cut that down and use that because thats what helps move the p-r-n-d-2-l indicator correctly. heres what i mean, you can see the big space, which doesnt move the hole enough to show you what gear you're in. of course we all dont need that anyways, right?

heres a night pic with my 194 LED bulb behind the shifter plate

if you guys have any questions or anything, let me know!
the whole process took a couple hours or so, and i was changing my oil at the same time..

Looks niceee

I might as well buy a Levoc shifter, if it has a spacer, that's just what I need

Great job on the DIY
