Dashboard sensor?

There is a round black "sensor" on top of my dashboard, as well as an unused space for another one next to it. I do not have automatic headlights, so don;t expect this to be the sensor for that, so... what is it?

Guessing that it's a sensor - never seen anything like it before, though the Owner's manual does indicate such a sensor would be there if I had the automatic headlights, which I don't

You mean the interior thermometer is in that spot in direct sunlight? Makes me wonder where the exterior thermometer is - any idea?
