Lost forward gears...

94 Camry V6 ...
Lost all my forward gears
just over the course of a day
started slipping a little bit,
and then by the end of the day...
wouldn't go.
Reverse works fine though!

I'm hoping it's an obvious symptom of a simple fix...

vacuum line? solenoid maybe?

Possible factors: It's been cold as hell outside lately, been driving on roads of slick ice, and it also started running a little weak just a few days earlier.

Help! Thanks..

I'd have to agree with the judge here. From your description, it sounds like the trans bit it.

You might want to look at a salvage yard. Most yards around here will give a 30 day warranty (part only - no labor).

Probably the transmission, like they're saying. Check the filler stick, see what fluid looks like. BUT... it may be apples&oranges, my 2009 Corolla lost it's 3rd and 4th gear, also Engine Check lite came on. Turned out squirrels chewed some cable -$250 to troubleshoot and repair.

Definitely time to go looking through the junkyard. Or maybe even online suppliers that pull parts. I see quite a few on ebay for a few hundred bucks.

Dunno if this link works: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trk...All-Categories

I even see a rebuilt unit for $949 though you can make them an offer. Probably not much cheaper once you factor in freight and installation though.

This one seems pretty decent, 122K miles on it:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-96...f#ht_500wt_956

Also this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1994-...#ht_729wt_1165

There's a lot more including some cheaper ones but I'd check what kinda mileage they have before buying...saw one with like 220K and it's probably not worth the labor to put something like that in. For a nice one even with freight you're looking at around $500-600. Dunno how much labor is involved but I'd guess that it'd still be a lot cheaper than that $1850 quote you got.
