Shift knob replacement

I had just started the process of installing a new shift knob (it's an automatic with a O/D button). After I took out the screws, I tried to slide the knob off, it slid up about an inch, then became significantly harder to pull. When I tried to force it off it felt like something was holding it down, maybe the O/D button wires. Getting to the point, anyone who has installed a new shift knob on an automatic please help me out and let me know how to take the old one off. Thanks.

Ok but you can't see them or get up to reach them. I was just speculating that that was the problem.
