Shudder at low speed acceleration

Yeah, so my Camry which was supposed to have been sold today, but this little incident occured, shudders when I accelerate even moderatly. Once i'm going anything above 40, if I bury the pedal, she takes off strong. But below 40, all I get is sputtering/shuddering, and occasional backfiring and the engine seems like it's about to stall out. No CEL, everything APPEARS fine under the hood. Smooth idle exactly where it belongs.

Toss out some ideas?

Oh, and it's a '92 3vz-fe with 90k. The problem came about real suddenly. no warning and no gradual onset. Just all of a sudden. And once you get moving decent, and you punch it, the car will take off strong, almost seems stronger than before.

Eh, it's not suspsension shudder. it's engine sputtering and the engine keeps momentarily losing power and then revving high again.

Mine did something like that at a higher speed (around 55-65) And my car smells funny like bad burning gas. But the same reaction. My friend was saying maybe O2 sensor or fuel line but it did the same thing for about a 1.5 sec. Um if ya losing power guessing your rpm guage dropped also it might be the alt.

I would say its a problem with the ignition system. But ignition system problems get worse as you put more load on the engine.

Your problem is weird cos you said it runs fine from 40 mph on up. And it chugs at anything below 40.

sounds like a bad sparkplug wire or even plugs. Maybe one of the sparkplug wires has a bad connection at the plug.

ya know, I was just thinking about sparkplug wires too? also plugs themselves? Engine could be missing at higher rpm but maybe not as noticable? Telltale will be gas consumption. Also, vacuum hoses. Looks like the engine is coming on its 100k mark. Might be time for some servicing.
