why???
jack it up disconnect the lines at the pump let it drain....
put key in ignition turn it on to run with engine off,...
while both wheels are off the ground force wheels by hand to turn all the way in both directions...this empties the rack...
reconnect lines...
fill pump....
turn car on... fill pump...
turn wheel all the way to one side...refill pump...
turn the wheel all the way to the other side...refill pump.....
done..
do not over fill ....fill to cold line marking

^ Your forgetting one thing.

The power steering pump runs off the engine (crank). So theres noway it'll run with the engine off.

And you don't fill the pump. You fill the fluid reservoir (it takes Dexron II/III ATF).

i have been using the sucktion thingie that you use to remove snot from babies to vacumm the ps fluid and then i just refill with fresh one.

(also: i use a different snot-extractor for the brake fluid as well...used to do this yearly..but lately i've lost these sucktion thingies)

if you have contaminated the system with another fluid or caustic material this is the only way to truely clean it out....
I once had a lady com into my shop after having put brake fluid in her system....baaad girl
