Public service announcement for you 5-speed guys- BUY GM SYNCHROMESH!!!!
Holy shit I just put my synchromesh in yesterday and it truly is as if I have a brand-new transmission. Before, I would try to catch Second at 5.5k and not be able to do it- grinds all the way in.... now... 6k and it's a nice click-click. No drama at all.
I used this stuff primarily due to my worn synchro on Second, but driving it now, you would never guess it was worn! All thge other shifts have smoothed a little, but my synchros were fine there originally.
I know there have been numerous other threads about this very subject, but damn... had to come by and sing its praises...

Nice, I hear that stuff works about as well as the synchromesh... the pennzoil stuff is also good- same as GM but half the price- but since I couldn't find it locally I had to go with the synchromesh...
I thought it was too good to be true. It's not!

where did you purchase GM syncromesh? Would a chevy dealer carry it? GM syncromesh is transmission fluid right? Cuz my second gear grinds just like you explained yours used to and everyone says i need to replace my transmission fluid. Should i use GM syncromesh?
PoR2GeEzCamry- Yes Yes Yes! Synchromesh can be bought at a chev. dealer, that's how I got mine, and it is a direct replacement for the fluid in there. You will need to purchase three quarts and it'll cost anywhere b/w 10 and 16 a quart depending on where you go.
Replace that fluid! Synchromesh does exactly what it is said to do!!! You'll think someone gave you a new transmission when you weren't looking I swear...

Yes, I'd highly recommend Redline's products, including the ATF. I use the Redline D4 ATF in my Mustang's T5 5-spd transmission (requires ATF), and it made a huge improvement in that...
alright now im confused... I posted a thread a couple months ago asking what to do to make my transmission clinking noise in second gear to go away. The told me the best thing to use was any non-synthetic DEXRON III product. Now is the GM syncromesh going to harm my transmission because it doesnt contain dexron iii or will it not matter?

It may or may not work. Its up to you to risk it.
Or should I say, it will probably get rid of the grind, but it may not be good for the gears...
I just put in new Dexron III fluid in my tranny (when changing an axle) and all my grinding went away.

*note, this only goes for the gen2 3s-fe 5-speed guys*

I'm not sure I get it Charlie- if the synchromesh has pretty much eliminated grinding, then how could that be bad for the gears? I'm not sure entirely about how it all works, but if the synchronizer and the input shaft are at an equal speed and the gear is not grinding, what's getting hurt?

It depends on how well the new fluid protects the gears after they are meshed (ie, not shifting). For a new car, you also need to have the gears themselves last a long time. Its not much of an issue on an old tranny though - if the synchros are going, its probably better to be able to shift than to keep the bearings and gears going for another 100k miles.
Let me put it this way: I wouldn't put this in my WRX, but I would consider it on my Camry. (since new standard fluid got rid of the grinding in my Camry, I'm going to stay with that... )

Synchromesh fluid is great on older cars, but for a newer tranny like a Solara or 93+ MR2 tranny, I'd use Redline MT-90. I had Synchromesh in my 92 Camry tranny and it helped more than the MT-90 and original fluid i had in it. In my Solara tranny now, Im using MT-90 and its butter smooth. Im gonna try Synchromesh in my 91 MR2 tranny now, cause the synchros are horrible. If it doenst help it, Im just gonna buy a 93+ tranny.
