Pics of 3S-FE internals (56K go take a dump)

Most of you guys know that I blew up (grenaded a piston) my turbocharged 3S-FE.

Well anyways I finally got around to taking some pics of the stock internals.

Just thought some of you gen 2 guys with a 3S-FE might be interested in seeing what lies inside your engine.

Bad tuning.

#4 cylinder ran lean and melted the piston.

I'll take some pics of the f**ked up piston and post em up.

Its alright, its just a piston. You live and learn.

If I ever turbocharge another 3S-FE, i'll know what to look out for.

I see a hole in the connecting rod, this must be where the oil moves up the rod. I also see two holes on the piston bottom, is that for squirting oil onto the cylinder walls or something?

I also see the hole on the crankshaft, this must be how the oil is fed to the journal bearings.

What I can't see is how the oil moves from the connecting rod to the wrist pin to the cylinder walls? Can you see any more oil squirters? Can you figure out how the oil moves from the connecting rod to the cylinder walls? I am very curious. Also, am I right to assume the top piston ring and middle ring are the compression rings? And the bottom ring is the oil ring? I cant seem to make out the construction of the oil ring, looks like a wire running in between & spacers separating 2 oil rings??

Nice pics. Thanks.

The hole in the rod is to oil the rod bearings (the side laying against the rod).

The two holes on the bottom of the piston are for oiling the wrist pin.

Correct.

It also oils the other side of the rod bearings (side facing the crank).

As the crank rotates its constantly slinging oil all over the place. This is how the cylinder walls get oiled.

Correct. Top & middle = compression. Bottom = oil.

The oil ring is 3 pieces.

So, any guesses on how much boost/hp these internals would hold when properly tuned?

I might want to find out soon...

Thanks for your answers. One last question. From the looks of this pic, it looks like the crank will never touch the oil in the oilpan (the dipstick gives a clue where the oil level will be). So is it correct to say that the oil being slung around is actually coming from the oil in the journal bearings?

No idea. You'll have to go into that uncharted territory and find out.

I was running 10psi until the #4 piston grenaded, but that was with bad tuning.

You have to remember that oil is pumped up into the cylinder head (below the valve cover). The oil then makes it way back down to the oil pan through passages in the head and block.

The oil pan is not just a open pan. It has a baffle in it. So the oil pan looks like it has 2 levels to it (upper and lower). The oil pickup sits into the lower level and oil that was pumped up into the head drips back down into the upper level and eventually makes it way back to the lower level. The upper level of the oil pan sits pretty close to the crank.

So you can see how the crank slings oil around.

Theres actually a aftermarket part called a crank scraper. It bolts on between the block and oil pan. Its job is to reduce the amount of oil thats slinged around by the crank. This also gives you some power, cos the crank is no longer slinging all that oil around.

Heres a pic of one:
