The other day due to the hot weather I tried firing up my A/C, but it didn't work. No slight strain on the engine like usual either. I haven't used it since last August or September so I have no clue what caused this. Somebody HELP!

What do you mean it doesn't work? Is it not cold? Does the fan still blow? Does the AC compressor not come on? Could you even tell if the AC compressor would come on last year? Please clarify.

BTW, my AC just isn't cold anymore this year. I need to replace the refridgerant but my car is so old...I think I need to do a conversion....anybody know anything about this??? R13, R14?

The fan still blows. Except the air is hot. I can't tell if the compressor comes on or not but I know for sure it did last year.

I had the same problem w/ my car today. It was just blowing out heat. I took it to my mechanic, he pumped like 5 cans of that ice refrigator whatever stuff in it and like that, it was good to go blowing out cool air. It cost 5.99 per can at murray's. Just ask them at the store and they'll hook u up w/ the right one.

I've got a '90 Camry and the A/C quits working after a short period of time - it runs cold for a few miles then the green light starts blinking, the compressor quits and no more cold air. I sure would appreciate any ideas on how to figure out the problem. Thanks, Joe

I also have a problem with the AC. It works for a while and then quits with the green light blinking. They checked the refridgerant level and it appears ok. Compressor was replaced 1 year ago. Any ideas?

I finally got mine fixed. After recharging the system twice and putting in a new condenser mine is finally working. Hoepfully for good this time. It sounds like yours may be a problem with the switch. Take it to the Toyota dealership and see what they say about it. If it is a common problem they may know about it.

I have the same problem, everything works but the air coming out just isnt cold. Whats the exact name of this "stuff" and where do you pour it in???

What kind of symptoms did it have before you got it fixed?

Its called r134a refrigerant. It comes in cans that are a little more than 5 buks. My Car took a little more than 2 I believe. Some older systems take r12 refrigerant. I am not sure how much that is.

Refrigerant cannot simply be poored in. The refrigerant cans are hooked up to a hose which is attached to a set of gauges which is attached to the high and low pressure fittings on ur A/C system. After vacumming ur system the first can will be sucked in. After that turn on ur a/c to help suck in the refrigerant.

This is not a typical DIY job. But if you have the gauges it isn't very hard.

A/C systems should always be fixed by a professional. There's lots of stuff that needs to be checked before refilling it.

Typically, the reason why your A/C is blowing hot air is because you have a leak in your A/C system. Mine was the expansion valve right by the lower right air damn. If you see a lot of black gunk around there, it's a leak. You have to get that fixed before refilling.

The 92 Cam used the old R12 refridgerant...it's now illegal to use. If you want refill your old A/C, you have to do a conversion to the new R134a refrigerant. Mechanics can do the conversion for pretty cheap but they won't do it properly...R12 and R134a are NOT compatible, everything needs to be flushed, the A/C dryer needs to be changed...etc. It's a big job.... If you don't get that all fixed and you do the conversion, it'll last like a year or so. And if you don't fix the leak, you'll be refilling your A/C within a year.

My whole A/C conversion cost about $500 Cdn.

What's your take on this scenario - the A/C compressor spins up for 2 seconds, shuts off, then blows warm air into the cabin. Do you think it's my expansion valve too, or the A/C compressor itself?

I have no idea, but it doesn't sound like your expansion valve.

Try searching on Google for general A/C problems as most likely other car owners have had this problem as well. If you can, go on the Camry Newsgroup (alt.toyota.camry) and ask your question. There are some certified Toyota mechanics (MDTech?) that roam the board that will give you an exact answer.
