Alright my gen 3 cam is coming together nicely. Kit is here, rims on way, audio alive and kickin, video ready to install. All this wit no engine mods I don't want to be a street racer. I really don't care for initial torque. I gonna hit 80mph regardless of the situation. It would be nice I could get a sponsor for my engine mods but I am not looking for hand outs. I am fixing the cam for me not anybody else.
Really I just want my baby to last another 8 years. I just want to rebuild the engine. New bearings crank clean cylinders new heads, exhaust set up. Nothing too serious. Being that I am no mechanic I was wondering how much would job like this cost? And what should I consider when rebuilding an engine.? Or is it cheaper to buy a rebuilt engine? Maybe go from 4cyl to 6? I don't know. Just need good respectable advice. Please no stupid responses. Thanks.
If your thinking rebuilding the engine/tranny its gonna be in the thousand range. Not too steep though, Probably around 2,000 maybe, but that's just averaging. You would need to have the engine strip, ported and polish, bore, basically just overall rebuilt on pistons, rods, crank, bearings, etc. A lot of things would have to be done, Your best bet would be just buy a already rebuilt and slap that on. Or do a conversion like one person from camryman and install a 1998 v6 engine into your car. Will definitely last longer and would not have the same kind of problems the 3rd gen engines would normally have. Anyway, good luck to you which ever plan you wish to take. Either way still gonna cost a lot of money.
I don't mind spending 2gs on the engine. But If swap is the same then might else swap. But wouldn't have to chane the tranny too. I was looking into that before. The gear ratios are almost identical but like i said I ain't mechanic. This is just a pain. It's like you keep tryin but it's another frigin bump in the way. Sometimes a damn brick wall. Oh well. So close but yet so far
if you don't care about perfoormance and just want a car that'll keep on running, just start looking for low-mileage motors now...
I'll guess that you have the 5sfe....you didn't say how much mileage you have on it, but it'll probably still last you a good number of years.....if you can pick up a low mileage 5sfe now too, when you finally have problems with your motor, you can just drop it in for very little money...and if you have a friend that knows how to do it, it'll even be free....easy since its a direct swap
and the only reaason for getting a engine now is so that you can find a low-mileage one. even now the engine's not new anymore, but in a few years, low mileage ones'll be real rare

i agree... the 5sfe with 85k on it should last you another 100k at LEAST... i would actually consider 85k to be a lower mileage motor for a toyota. but they are right... if you get a 5sfe with 40k on it now and hold on to it for 6 years, it will be a great drop in...
the rippmods kit is great for your engine. the reliablity of the low boost turbo on a stick is key in your case... you want reliablity get the rippmods supercharger... i would get the s/c now and wait about 2 or 3 years on the replacement engine... they will still be around then i think. even if you find one with like 60-80k on it, its still got TONS of life to it!
Thanks for the insurance guys. I don't know why i'm buggin out. I guess cause it's all this pressure people callin me tellin me pick up you stuff when you want it shipped nonsense and I'm like all i do is get tune up and an oil change and everythings fine. The cam has been good to me. Just didn't want her little moter to get tired. As soon as I figure to how to post picks I will. I hope by the end of June she will be done. I should be at Niagra too.
every NY meet i go to my car is a mess... its no big thing, the NYC meets are fun. we just hang out, take pics, eat chinese buffet (usually) and then whatever...
last meet, by car had no interior, no radiator fans, a bunch of nasty shit... but i was there... good times man! its by no means a contest of looks, performance, or whatever. except this meet, cause its at the race track. im gonna see how fast my v6 swap made me... for real.
Nothing wrong man. If I go I'm gonna just watch. This ain't gonna be the racer. Next project. I'll try. My birthday is actually the 14. It would be nice to take my ride to the track Damn guess you guys wanna see the ride. I will try to my best. Promise.
