$8 CAI/Ram air? (large pictures)

HA! made you look! no but really i did do that today all it is a nice pice of dryer hose from home depot that i got for $8 and i only use half of it and some duct tape as well. but yes it can be done the inlet for air on the stock box is a little less than 4" in size, so the 4" hose works well and a ring of duct tape as well, now here are the instructions on how to do it ....

1. remove the tire on the driver side and the wheel well cover

2. you would want to semi-remove (just un-do all the screws) the 1/4 panel and remove the sound damper, and the stock inlet piping.

3. you want to fish the dryer line from inside the panel to the box and making shure you dont cover anywhere the wheel well cover needs to reconect

4. conect the hose to the box this might take a little re-shaping of the hose since it's round the the box as a triangle shape, then seal with duct tape.

5. run the other end to the bummper and fit it somewhere it can pick up air (i have mine pointing to the front to give it a little ram effect (crappy but what can you say for $8)), tape in place

6.put everything back together

and that took me about 3~4 hours with trail and error like trying not to remove the 1/4 panel but the fuse box is in the way..

give her a nice deeper tone at lower levels and noticeable increase in excleration (or that could be because i also replace the o2 senser at the same time) but ya here some pictures of what it looks like and ya i have a k&n in my stock box so eh more power to me!

piping going to the front

piping in the 1/4 panel

that where i have it in the front

that all you see from the engine bay

yup not too flasy, expensive or effective but WELL worth $8 in my oppion or i'm just an idiot

Edit note: stupid yahoo ..... crappy picture hosting

No need for a filter, it leads straight to the airbox where the stock panel filter would be... right?

LOL, knew you were going to show us your invention.

You picked aluminium foil over PVC?

Well cold air is what you wanted, good innovation.

Should do the mesh screen mod too.

having the tube face forwards for the "ram air" effect isnt gonna do sh!t. Your car/anybodys car here isn't going to go fast enough for that to make any improvement in performance. You are just gonna get more bugs and stuff caught in your air filter.
A while ago i found this report done up by some dude that explains the speed neccesary to gain anything by a "ram air" type inlet.. Im having trouble finding it right now, but as soon as I find it, Ill post it.

well, i congratulate u for your urge to tinker..... but i agree that the dryer vent hose will not make much of a difference in performance, other than stopping up your K&N filter with bugs and debris. I would advise you to do a real DIY CAI with 3" mandrel bent piping and a conical high flow filter. It's actually a lot easier than u might think to do. I am willing to provide u with any help or answers to any questions u might have, as i'm sure plenty of us here are.

well lets say i do move it what the hell would keep the bugs out of the real CAI if it was down there anyways? it's not pulling any air from the upper half i have it sealed off (in the same manner a CIA would be) really it does do most of the same of a CAI but just not having an open air filter down there.... yes ram air is crap but it makes the $8 dryer hose sound more fancy and i use it to impress stupid people..... dryer house is a closed houseing .... the air box is closed .... closed connection ..... it would be the same ..... well i think the only way to prove this is to find some one else around me (to keep area temp the same) with a CAI to test the in going temp to see which is diffent ..... but still the point is this a REALLY cheap thing for poor people to do for a little extra boost that cant drop 80 for a full CAI ....

holy crap, that took you 3-4 hours to make? You could've made a CAI in 3-4 hours....

But ghetto wise, I myself used a dryer hose years that fed directly into a closed filter. All I got was a really really dirty air filter.
