k...today im going off to Bethlehem some 75 miles away to get magnaflow part number 14818 muffler...it looks good...nice and oval with a straight tip....i dont know what i wanna do with it yet...i called a shop and they said that stainless steel catback would cost like 200$ usd if i supplied the muffler...and from 60-90 if i jus wanted the muffler installed...im kinda leaning towards catback for the extra 100....but...if i plan to move so far away from my home after college that i cant take my car, should i spend the extra money or not....and no, i cant jus not buy anything...i have to be the cool kid with the muffler (o and by the way, im a junior in high school if it matters) thanks guys...im goin go pick up the muffler right now and check this thread when i get back

IF the exhaust looks good and you can get a few more years out of it, just get the muffler. If it looks a little rough go all-out catback, I say. These pipes seem to like to rust out right at the flanges, so look at them the most...

although by changing the pipes, its also going to make it sound a WHOLE lot different... my guess is it will sound like poop if you just install that muffler. you are probably going to get a really annoying airplane sound until 3-4K rpm and after that it will be silent.
once you replace the pipes, it will get loud at higher rpms, just like it should.
trust me, ive had 4 exhaust setups on my car, all custom ones. im telling you man, get the entire exhaust done. at first i decided to put the muffler on, i HATED it, and i got laughed at.
my recommendation for you is:
custom catback (2.25-2.5 no bigger!) WITH a resonator (unless you want to sound like a riceburning honda), going to the muffler. getting stainless steel is irrelevant imo, waste of $$.
my $.02
btw i had just the muffler installed at first too, and i hated it... everytime id be cruising at 50-80 mph the entire cabin was overcome with a deafening hum. very not cool

resonator is cruicial unless you want to sound like a honda. but resonators are cool because you can install them after the entire exhaust has been set up.. i.e. you could initially have them do it w/o a resonator, then once you decide you hate it (which you will ) you can have them install one without tearing up the pipes at all.
^not mine....its my parents room..but seriously..i need some help on this issue....will it sound good if i dont do a catback and put a muff and res on there....

just weld it and see if you like the sound i did my own dual exhaust with 2 cherry bomb turboII mufflers and it's nice and deep.the car doesn't drone it's actually pretty quiet. but when the car is cold it sounds like ass since i took out the resonator. i'm going to put another back in when i get the chance. but it sound good and it costs me 70 bucks
30for both mufflers 20for the pipes and 20 to get it welded at the hobby shop when i asked for a professional to do it they said 200 and that was one muffler right after my resonator and the only one me thought could fit there was a glass pack
i'm glad i did it my self
go to my cardomain site and see for yourself i need to paint it
you guys are getting ripped off. my exhaust cost 160 total mufflers not included, and the job they did was amazing.

your stock exhaust setup already has a resonator on it. the thing is, your stock exhaust pipes also sound a whole lot different than any other catback (custom or not) will sound. this has a lot to do with the smaller pipe size for more backpressure. i personally like the sound of a bigger pipe and a resonator, because its not at all loud in the cabin, the exhaust tone is incredibly smooth and consistent, and never sounds like crap (cold or hot / low rpm or high). its a happy medium between a race-like sound and stock.
2wickedtoyz, im guessing you have the honda-esqe sound. to each his own man. ive had that sound before with previous setups, everytime loving it at first and hating it after a week of use.
all im saying big_p (this is what i tell everyone in the camry community) do it right the first time
if you want an aftermarket exhaust, do the actual aftermarket exhaust...
jon
p.s. 2wicked, if you want a picture to show up your sig, paste this without the 4 quotation marks...
i cut my resonator out to see what it would sound like without it i didn't weld the pipe on there so now all i have to do is put another resonator and i'm all good. i would rather not pay an ass load of money for something i might not like a month later. i'd rather figure out what will sound better then take it to a professional and have them do it the exact same way and design i did but in stainless steel till then i'm still looking for the right set up. i still have no tips on it cause i'm not sure which ones i'll like due to the fact that i'm trying to locate a body kit for my wagon.
so no thanks for your .000000002 cents.
