ok guys, Opinion time is now open. do you guys think that an exhaust silencer insert would make any real difference on the inspection failing volume of my exhaust? i.e. enough effect to pass inspection? any and ALL thoughts are welcome.
I had one of these on a muffler I had on a Nissan Altima I had. The muffler now resides on my girlfriend's Accord. I had another similar muffler on a 240SX I had a while back. Both mufflers mentioned came with a silencer that looks like the one you posted.... it sounded horrible.
It quietened the muffler enough alright.. but the car sounded horrible.... like it was a 3cyl Metro. We threw the silencer away and will never use one again!
My muffler came with a silencer... as soon as i popped that bitch out sounded sooo much better... i think that would be a waste of money....but if you need it, make sure it fits, and go ahead and get it.
It made it NOTICEABLY quieter with it in the exhaust. We had a long parking lot at my old job and without it you could hear me coming from at the end without being under FT. With it in you couldn't really hear it till I was pretty close.... but like I said.. it make the 2.4L I had sound like a 3cyl with it in!
If you got a muffler on a automatic and a manual with the same power, i guess the muffler is gonna sound the same...I guess the more power your engine puts out, the louder your muffler will sound...
If the silencer fits your muffler... it WILL make it quieter. I guarantee it. But... you will NOT like the sound.
No matter what kind of silencer you get, it will make your muffler sound like crap. The only time I've heard a muffler sound decent with a silencer installed was on a Apexi N1 on a 92 Integra with the silencer that is made for it on it.
im running a silencer right now on a universal muffler i got from a car show. much quieter with it on, AND it doesnt sound bad. but my case is different because i have a v6.
even though i dont know what the car sounds like from the outside (since im the one that drives it), i have heard nothing but compliments.
i would just buy the silencer and use it to pass inspection, then remove it later. but youd be surprised, even a silenced muffler could potentially fail sound inspection - 90 decibels (i think 90db is the passing limit) isnt all that loud, really.
personally, ive been wondering if it were possible to install a 2nd resonator to the exhaust pipe. i cant really tell if another one would fit though.

You can add another resonator the to piping on most cars. I've seen a lot of Accord owners on another board I frequent do this with excellent results. Take your car to your local muffler shop and see if they can do it for you.
