I have a 96 Camry v6 that started running bad the other day when the check light came on. I pulled the codes with my reader and got the following codes. p0300 p0301 p0303 p0305. These codes all refer to a misfire. Since the coils fire 1-2 3-4 5-6 why is the engine just missing on half the engine? Any ideas on what broke, came unplugged, etc?

Spark plugs?Wires?
Battary?
I had misfiring in the 4th cylinder when I drained my battary... but it might not be the case for you.

If you drive and you feel less power, check your spark plugs and their connecting cables. Generally, if your spark plugs arent connected properly, your car will rely on those that are connected.

Spark plugs in a V6 Camry could be tricky. Well I know my 93 V6 is tricky becuase three of them are on the front of the engine, but the other three are completely behind the engine so its difficult to get in there. If you are unable to check them out by yourself, take it to the mechanic and they will tell you.

Although the spark plugs are in that order, the cylinders do not fire in that order. I believe the order for the 1mz is 1-3-4-2-5-6. But I'm not 100% sure of that.

And if three cylinders were misfiring, your engine wouldn't be running. That's way to many. One or maybe two. But three, I highly doubt it.

The wires and plugs are new less than 20K on them Bosch plus 4 and new OEM wires. The battery is about a year old. No problems till when I was driving the car when I kicked to pass someone the RPM went up and the engine shut down. I coasted to the side of the road. When I restarted the engine runs rough. I can not feel or hear any misfires, but when I clear the codes. they come right back. P0300 P0301 P0303 P0305. If I put the car in neutral the engine purrs no roughness. But the codes still come back P0300 etc. What else can I check, I thought it would be some kind of sensor or something related to the 1,3,5 bank of the engine. How about cam timing jump?

Your timing may be too far advanced from the sound of it. That's why it runs fine at low RPM, but as soon as you hit high RPM, it gets too far off.

How would you adjust the timing. It is run by the computer.

I surely hope.......you didn't unplug the spark plug wires and put them back on........with the wrong order.......retarding your ingnition system?

Switiching the ignition wires wouldn't retard your timing. Your engine wouldn't start at all.

There is a small Idler screw you can make minor adjustments with, but besides that, you would have to bring it to a shop. Which I would suggest doing.

I have not worked on the engine at all, I was passing on the highway and giving it a bit of WOT, The engine reved to about 6000 and shut off. I coasted off the road. The car restarted right away and has had the roughness since when it has a load. In park or neutral its smooth as every. That's why I think the roughness is due to a sensor or wire that has been detached on one side of the engine as I'm getting p0300, p0301, p0303, p0305. The 1,3,5 cylinders. Since the coils fire 2 cylinders and all the wires were replaced together it just doen't make any sense. The fuel system feeds all cylinders not half an engine. Thanks to all for suggestions so far. I'll let everyone know the outcome if I ever figure this out.

What does your fuel trim for bank one look like? What does the signal from your bank one sensor one o2 look like? Bet your problem is in the bank one fuel control. The computer controls fuel delivery to bank one and bank two separatly as if they were two three cylinder engines.

I don't know, Now that you have given me a idea i'll check these settings today with my scanner and report back. What part could fail that would mess up the fuel mixture on just one bank?

well the 1mz idle is also controled by a computer , there is no adjustment screw for that .... but the cam postion sensor might be out of alignment, check and make sure thats set right, might of gotten loose when you guned it, and when was the last time you got the timing belt changed?

Well, take it into the shop. I think its the law for the mechanic to give you a free estimate and tell you exactly what he thinks the problem is.

Timing belt was replaced about a month ago, engine has been running great has around 146K miles. This is the first problem I've had it's had the oil and filter changed every 5k Mobil 1 synthetic and bosch filter also has a K&N cold air intake rest of car is stock.
