so i got my car back from the autobody shop, cuz i was rear ended about 2 weeks ago. the bumper was misaligned and the rear frame was bent. that got fixed.... but then after i drove 1.5 block out of the shop, the tranny died!! i was in D gear, going at 50ish at 5000 RPM!! i put it in 2 and L gear, still just pure revving doesn't accelerate at all as if it's in N gear!!! how's that possible?!?!
so i turned into the nearest parking lots making sure i don't stop halfway, or else i won't be able to move again.
so after i stopped in the parking lot, i tried to move around with the gears again, but still doens't go. so i called the autobody shop and someone came by and check whats up, he didn't do much. we tried to push the car into a parking spot, so it won't interfere with the traffic in the parking lot, but the car won't move at all. so that guy thinks the gear is stuck in P gear.
that was my morning.
what does fellow TN members have to comment or what might be happening wiht my car?
right now my car is in a Tranny shop, i'll be hearing from them tmw.

I had a similar problem with a car once. 1984 Camaro Z-28. It had broken down, spent two weeks in the shop. I got it out of the shop finnally, drove it for 15 mins and the trannie started slipping, I turned around to go back to the shop and in my anger I floored it and the trannie went bye bye. Now before I left the shop a new mechanic came up to me, said this your car?? I said yea, why? Hes says "awsome car man, Ill give you $1,500 for it right now." I said thanks, but no thanks...not for sale. Later he comes up to me as I was leaving he gives me his number. Says "call me if you reconsider man, Ill buy it off you even if the trannie goes out man. My offer will still stand" I laughed at him, said now way in hell this trannie is gunna blow, its got a rebuilt 700r4 with a shift kit. Not for sale" Well, after I sat on the side of the road all of that registered with me. I called the shop and spoke with my friend who is the manager there. I asked him to pull up a record of who worked on my car, who drove my car...anyone that even walked by my car. The guy that was so pushy to buy my car worked on it, and drove it. Everything added up. I got on the phone with the guy and asked him if he still wanted to buy my car. Hes like "yes!!!" I told him if he would send a tow truck, to come get the car he could buy it. he says "ok" I say, "one more thing man, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID TO MY CAR MOTHER FUCKER, YOU MUST THINK IM FUCKING STUPID...ILL TELL YOU WHAT, WHEN I GET BACK TO THE SHOP...IF YOUR STILL THERE, AFTER I BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF YOU...IF YOUR STILL FUCKIN BREATHING YOU CAN HAVE THE FUCKING CAR, HOWS THAT SOUND?" He hung up. When I got back to the shop he was gone, the manager said he just walked out and quit. I never found that mother fucker, never got my Camaro back....never paid my bill either. The car was free, and im better off with out it, now that I think about it. Sorry to hear about your loss man.
Get a record of who worked on your car. If the trannie shop finds something out of the ordnary they should let you know. The guy that fucked my Camaro up loosend the pan on my Camaro.

well, i got it towed to an autoshop that my uncle always took his car there for everything. he diagnoised my camry, took off the oil pan, and he found metal bits in the oil.... so chances are the gears were grinding and that the gears are gone i'm guessing. he quoted me for a used tranny for almost $2000 CDN. i'm not sure how used it is, but i'm gonna ask for the mileage on the tranny.
but he also told me to call this tranny shop that the autoshop owner has dealt with. this tranny shop might be able to rebuilt my tranny. this tranny shop will not charge for towing if the job is big. so i'm gonna wait for his answer tomorrow.
however, will it cost more the rebuilt or just install a "new" tranny in?

right now i have 3 options...
1 - there is this one shop that offers me to replace with an used transmission with about 110000km on it... for about 2100 CDN.
2 - there is this one shop that offers me to replace with an used transmission but i don't knwo how much clicks is on it, he said they get it from this shop where they deal with importing parts from Japan. And the parts they get is from wreck yards in Japan, where people savage their car after 5-6 years. So i guess my transmission is from Japan, they said its gonna cost 1600 CDN.
but thats a 500 CDN difference, i don't know which if i should risk saving the 500 CDN.
3 - since i don't know what is wrong internal of the transmission, there is this transmission that will take apart my transmissionand rebuilt any broken parts... however, it will cost 440 CDN just to take the transmission apart to see what is wrong. and if i dont' want to go ahead with the rebuilt, i will have to pay 440. but if i go along with the rebuilt, the 440 will be included with the labour.
Problem is that i don't know if the rebuilt will cost less then getting installing a used transmission. because he transmission guy said depending on what part in the transmission is broken. it can just cost between 10 dollars to 400-500 CDN per individual part. i don't want to spend 440 CDN just to check what is wrong internally wiht my transmission, then find out that it will cost less to replace with a used transmission. so taht will cost the diagnosis cost ($440) plus the cost of installing the used transmission ($1600/$2100)...
So what risk would u TN members recommend taking??
Also, i am considering to sell the car and get a "newer"-used Camry, probably 2001-2002.

I can relate to your dilema. I had to debate the exact same choices when my tranny blew. My story is linked below.
If you choose to go with either the used one from a wrecker or jap, both are a gamble. Then again, the exposure to escalating costs of a rebuild isn't great either. At the end of the day, the choice is yours. How much of a gambler are you?
If you can wait it out and have a place to store the car, search on www.car-parts.com for a low mileage tranny.
Ebay also sells rebuilts. I'm not sure if shipping and core fees make it feasible but they have tons of positive feedback and worth considering.
One last tip, if you decide to get a rebuild, get a warranty on the labour and parts. I got 1yr/10K when I did mine.
I ended up getting the tranny rebuilt a second time by a tranny shop who informed me that the previous mech. misplaced one small band. Otherwise, the tranny would have been fine. 2 yrs laters, the car still chugs along and I got my moneys worth. We're gonna drive the car to the ground and then throw it away.

That is quite possibly one of the best stories I've ever heard haha... I mean.. not a happy ending but seriosly, what a dumbass... if he would have been patient you probably would have called the shop and maybe given up on it and sold it to him.. lol
but back to the matter at hand... whats everyones thoughts on swapping to a manual tranny? is it possible? anythings possible. is it cheaper... or if more expensive, how much more expensive?

Good luck!
the shop that offers the rebuilt includes a 3yr/10000km warrenty.
shop that offers the installation of the used tranny includes a 90-days warrenty.
so.... i dunno which to go with?
but since i'm selling the car... i think i can get away with the 90-days warrenty. if it nothing goes wrong with the "new"-used transmission.
