i would think it's the same way as a i4 lower radiator hose. but i could be wrong someone correct me if i'm wrong

Are you talking a temp gauge? Cause your engine should have a thermostat stock. Car's have had them since the 80's and before....

you say it is super simple. when i looked at the lower hose it runs under my alternator so i am assuming i have to remove that at least to take a look at the thermostat housing. is this true.

^ You don't need to remove the alternator.

Just follow the lower radiator hose till it meets up with the engine. The thermostat housing is right there.

Heres a pic of it on my 3S-FE:
