I just got around to taking mine out. On my 2000 there are the 4 nuts and the vacuum line.
nuts: sprayed with Liquid wrench then loosened 1 minute later. They are 12mm and I used a 1/4" ratchet so I kind of had to hit it to pop them loose. The bottom rear one also held on two ground straps.
vacuum line: someone asked about this. If it won't come off with tugging, try twisting it first to break the bond between the rubber and the metal. If you can't twist by hand, grab and twist with a pair of needlenose pliers. Anything to un-seize the rubber from the metal. Worst case scenario is you split it lengthwise with a razor and you replace it.
HOLY CRAP is it dirty in there! In my case there was kind of caked on varnish as well as gritty stuff. I guess that must be soot from the EGR.
I am thinking about doing some water injection. I know water will clean out an engine quite well, so I am even more inclined towards that, and it will be upstream of the intake for sure!

I just ground down the edges with a dremel, I didn't do as neat a job as the pics in here but it did the trick.
I don't have any way of sensing when it actually opens. I took it for a test drive, and when accelerating hard (basically WOT), once the RPMs pass 3000, they start climbing much more quickly. So I wonder if in my case the thing is opening between 3-4k. Or maybe the rounded edges mean that the effects of the opening kick in faster?
Anyway, did it, back together, works.

I see some people are willing & able to take the unit out, but not with grinding the metal. Since I lost the engine on the Camry I was wondering, is there anyone here who wants a perfectly ground ACIS valve?

i read all 14 pages looking for enlightenment and i'm still confused.
all the questions i'm thinking have been asked, except, not responded to.
what is the "butterfly"?
do i grind the interior?
do i grind the metal plate's edges only? or its surface as well?
what do i polish this with? just TB cleaner? degreaser?
can i use a Black & Decker drill if i don't have a Dremel?
what's the necessity of grinding? is cleaning it not enough? or is the plate itself that isn't smooth by factory standards and because of it we're doing this...?

You only grind the hole the butterfly is in, it's soft aluminum or something. You don't grind the plate itself, it's hard metal and already quite thin.
