well i have been thinking more and more about getting a turbo this summer. only problem is i don't have the money to spend on a kit, so i plan to build(with the help of friends) one. i am not an expert for sure, but i know a good bit about what i will need, and questions on the others.

the whole idea came about when i was at my friends house, and he showed me that he had bought this turbo(its a factory turbo off a Mazda GTX, IHI RBH5 water cooled, for those who know them, cause i don't) from another friend for very cheap, but he decided to buy a full kit instead. so he offered it to me for about $80 just for the turbo itself.

i know i am going to need piping, intercooler, bov, possibly afc and i figure a fuel upgrade. but like a said i am not an expert, so thats where i need you guys help. i need to know what need besides that, or maybe recomendations where to pick one up for a good price.

the intercooler and bov i plan to get off an old Starion from a junkyard so those i can pick them up for cheap. as for the manifold, i was told i could take it to a local shop that was recomended to me and they can weld into the stock cast iron headers. piping, i guess i'll just find somewhere, jcwhitney or something. my question is my fuel, everyone i talk to says i have to upgrade my fuel system. this is why i am aksing sugestions on what i need to make my turbo work.

i don't want to build a huge powerhouse(yet), i just want to have a little more power so my car is not so slow. i autocross, so i just want a little more power for coming out of the turns. the other reason not for much power, is cause i have a 4cyl auto, so i can't push the tranny to much(yet, heheh).

thanks in advance
chris

An intercooler might not be necessary depending on how much boost you run.

Yes you will need to do something about fuel. More on this later.

Turbo manifold, oil lines + fittings, etc... etc..

Theres alot of parts but, thats all that I can think of for now.

Starion's have a bov? Most factory turbocharged cars that i've seen use a Bosch bypass / recirculation valve.

I suggest that you invest in a good bov like the Blitz dual drive or the HKS ssqv (super sequential). They go for about $200. I myself have a Blitz (older one with big horn).

I dunno about welding to cast iron. Cast iron absorbs alot of heat and its hard to weld to cos of that.

What you could do is have an adapter made so that you can bolt the turbo to the stock exhaust manifold.

The stock turbo manifold off a 91 - 95 MR2 Turbo will bolt right onto your 5S-FE, but the only turbo that will bolt up to it is a Toyota CT-26 unless you have an adapter to bolt on a different turbo.

I'm using a Garrett/AiResearch T3 along with a turbo manifold from a 91 MR2 Turbo and a custom made adapter (made it myself).

JC Whitney has mandrel bent piping.

I bought a few 2.5" OD 180 degree mandrel bent u-pipes (aluminized steel) from a local performance autoparts store. What I did was cut them up to get the pieces I need then weld it all together.

Yes you do.

What we did on Joe's (karma) car was run a MAP sensor from a MR2 Turbo and 360cc injectors from a MKIII Supra.

By the way hes selling the injectors and some other stuff.

You can also fool the stock MAP sensor into not seeing boost and run a fmu / boost dependent fpr.

Additional injectors along with a AIC (additional injector controller). This is the expensive option.

Standalone computer. Something like a Accel DFI, Electromotive TEC II/III, Haltech, Motec, Speedpro, etc.... Most expensive option.
