Hey guys. I just ordered a high output alternator for my camry, 4 cyl. I'm gonna run a ridiculous audio setup in there and im probably gonna need the extra amps. The alternator puts out about 140 amps, whereas the stock alternator puts out around 60. I plan on getting a deep cycle battery too.

I have heard that some of these high output alternators crap out really shortly, like after a month or so. Anyone have this problem???

Thanks, Eric

I purchased the alternator from this site: http://www.mralternator.com

I actually called the phone number, talked to a guy, he said for my 96 Camry 4 cyl... they had a 140 amp alternator for $230 (plus $10 shipping). Really nice guy on the phone... I believe they are based out of South Carolina. They come with a one year warranty.

Shipping should be about 7 more days, considering I just ordered it two days ago. I will let you guys know how the install goes.

I have heard from people who have bought high output alternators, that some are junk, and some are good. We will see what happens. Also, I called Stinger to see how much they would charge me for a high output alternator, they said b/w $700 - $1000 !! But I believe they custom build the alternator to the customers specifications. That was alittle bit to high of a price for me to pay...

Again, I will see what happens and get back to you guys !!!

Eric

I am in the market myself as well. Debating if I should have my current alt. rewound, which, as I have been told, produce about the same voltage as was advertised by that aftermarket alt. you are looking at. When it comes to reliability....I am not sure to be honest. I will ask around this weekend at the audio shows I am going to and see what they say. Thanks for the info! I live about an hr away from that shop...so I might call and see what they can do.

To be honest with you guys, I have no idea how well this aftermarket alternator will work... I still havent gotten yet (as of 5/20/02)

People have told me bad things as well as good things with aftermarket alternators. From what I hear, its best to have a professional install it (even tho its not really that hard to do it, especially on a 4 cyl like mine).

I will keep you guys posted...

Well as I promised...I asked around this weekend at the 2 audio shows I attended. For the highest end applications...most audio guys would say go Ohio Generator. They are about $1000 (US)...yet when below 2k RPM...they are usless...so for day to day driving these are a big waste of $. Now I did ask what most guys had done....and most said go rebuilt. One guy had purchased a rebuilt alt from a larger car Ford car for his Ford truck. He said....the key is to make sure you can get a decent warranty. He said a few of his friends bought rebuilt alts for very cheap...but they came with a 2 week warranty. He got himself a rebuilt alt for $200....and it came with a 2 year warranty....and has been able to run 4 1000D RF amps and 6 batteries off of it for 3 years now...not bad. Guess your best bet is call around and see what shops offer.

Yup, warranty is a key factor... I did not want to buy from Ohio Generator mainly because of their insanely priced products. This place looked really legit, sent me emails about tracking the product via ups, and so far have done an excellent job with my order. The alternator is scheduled to arrive on May 28. Like I said before, Ill let you guys know how the install goes.

Well I am assuming you and Rod (on camryman) are different people...but Rod posted this today about his search for aftermarket alts:

In Response To: Curious to where you found this alt Posted by tmanana on 5/23/02 11:42

Website: mralternator.com (although the Solara is not listed)
email: tom@mralternator.com
Phone: 864 591-1066 (ask for Tom Coker)

I talked to Tom today (nice guy)about the 1MZ-FE alternator; it is the *same* size as our stock 120A one and is a direct-fit replacement from NippoDenso (not Delco). Basically, it's the same casing, but a different rotor/stator-- I *think* it also fits the big Lexus'. If you wanted to go with a larger casing (which would be a trick w/ the supercharger drive belts) you could go up to 200A. Cost was $295 + $10 shipping. R.

Nope, Im not Rod  -- But I am putting a kick ass audio system together... this is why I need the alternator.

140 Amp Alternator
Optima Yellow-Top Deep Cycle Battery
JVC KDSH99 Mp3-cd plater
4 * 10 Rockford Fosgate He2 Subs
MB Quart DSD216 Components
MB Quart DKD169 6 by 9's
Clarion 1000 Watt DPX1000.2
Clarion 200 Watt APX400.4
2 Rockford Caps,
2 Rockford distribution blocks
And Lots of 4 guage wire
AND LOTS OF DYNAMAT....

Unfortunately, I DONT think they designed the camry for an audio install like this, considering the entire car vibrates

PICS TO COME... INSTALL IN TWO WEEKS
