Cruise Control speed sensor

Alright folks.... Help save me some time. Where is the exact location of the Cruise Control speed sensor in an 87 Camry. I suppose I could trace it down using the wiring guide in my Haynes Camry manual but since it's on loan I'm doing the lazy thing and asking all of you.

The reason I'm asking is because sometimes the car surges while using the cruise control and it's possible the sensor is giving erroronious speed readings to the CC ECU.
When in Cruise sometimes the gas pedal dips and car speeds up, then lets up and car slows to preset and repeats and sometimes when it does this it drops out of Cruise altogether.

If I'm not in cruise the car does not surge... However sometimes the speedometer needle jumps a bit. Related?

very much so related it uses the same speed sensor for the speedometer. so more or less it's your speed sending unit that needs to be replaced. or the wire tightend

So are you saying the speed sensor is in the insturment cluster? Intergral part of the speedo?

no it's attached to the speed sensor on the tranny and some where the wire gets split and the cruse controll reads the same signal that the speedo dose. so when your speedo fluxes your cruse controll reads that flux as well and trys to correct it. so the answer to your question is findin the manual where the speed sensor for the speedo is and thats the one you need to replace to fix the speedo and the cruse control

The wiring diagrams in my Toyota electrical manual show a speed sensor thats within the instrument cluster.

I looked at the diagrams for the instrument cluster and cruise control. Both diagrams show a speed sensor (inside the instrument cluster). And in both diagrams the speed sensor is between pins 2 and 3 on a 10 pin plug. The plug is on the backside of the instrument cluster.

Theres also a speed sensor on the backside of the tranny. Its about the size of a hockey puck and bolts onto the back of the tranny. I don't know if its related to the cruise control and speedo or not, so you'll have to check it out.
