okay, normally you could do this job by only removing one engine mount, the dog bone, its the one on top.

ok now, the crank pulley is a bit of a btch, its sealed and yes, it spins the camshaft pulley (never spin the camshaft !!), you can hold the camshaft pulley with another wrench, unless you have a good air pressure wrench... that might do the trick too

i did it alone, by attaching my wrench to the control arm of the suspension, and cranking my engine for a slit second, be carefull with this, ask your dad to help.

good luck

make sure you line up your TDC. and jab a screw driver into flywheel ring gear teeth or against a converter bolt. thats from my haines manual i'm more fluent with the v6 tho.

Can I just say, your Dad must be one unusual guy. Either he has no idea what's going on or he's the most patient person under the sun.

Smile timing belt change

Hey Kevin:

Hope I can help you out with some suggestions.

First you need a shop manual. The best manual is the Genuine Toyota shop Manual from dealer because it is very detailed and thorough...cost is about close to $300 CAD. I have used the Haynes manual in the past and I don't like it bec it is very mickey mouse.

The most difficult bolt to get out when doing the timing belt change is the 22mm cranshaft pulley bolt located at the bottom cover because it is very high torgue. There are only a few ways to properly get it out with doing any damage to your car...

1. Toyota specialty tool from dealer. Personally, I don't recommend it because if you can get it, it is good only for Toyota cars.
2. Ingersol Rand 1/2 inch air impact wrench, this is not a regular model, but a special high torque model with 600 lbs on the reverse and there is a newer (titannium) model with 1000 lbs on the reverse. Cost is about $300 CAD. This is what I used. The regular air impact wrench will not work for this job so don't even waste your time trying.
Chicago Pneumatic(CP) also makes a similar model with 700 lbs on reverse.

These high torque air impact wrench should do the trick. There was one job where I had to goto a 3/4 inch air impact because the bolt was just too tight and it worked like a charm. The 3/4 inch was too expensive to buy at $600 CAD, so I just rented it. Also you do need a air compressor for these tools.

Plan on giving yourself 1 day for this job( unless you are a mechanic and you are really familar with this job) as it took me almost 8 hours.

Looking back at your photos, you don't and I repeat you don't need to take out the 2 top pulleys or the valve covers, but you do need to take off the crankshaft bolt located at the bottom as shown on one of your photos in order to remove the bottom timing cover ... be sure to line up the timing pulley marks (3 of em) before you do the final removal of the bolt. You can line them up by rotating the crankshaft bolt, clockwise. Once the bolt is off, you can remove the belt tensioner, off comes the belt and just follow the procedure in the shop manual. It is pretty straight forward.

I should mention this is a complex job and is not recommended and I repeat not recommended for someone who is not experience in mechanical work because if you don't line line up your timing marks before you take your belt off or any movement of the during install, you're hooped or as they say SOL. You don't need to be a mechanic to do the job but if you are not sure, you should have someone who knows what they are doing to show you .

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

mike787
