What's the distributor o-ring for?

My mechanic told me the distributor housing was leaking oil internally. What do I need to replace to cure this? Seems like the o-ring could potentially be a solution. Anyone have experience with this, or any thoughts? Thanks,

^YEP^...Even if you eventually find out the shaft is worn down or damaged beyond sealing, it's worth trying first! (ie: CHEAP/EASY)
