I just wanted to ask your opinions on which engine you guys would prefer to buy if you had the choice of purchasing a V6 Camry... is there any advantage to buying the 92-93 Camry with the 3VZ-FE engine (other than the fact that it will be cheaper since its an older car)?
1MZ-FE because it's a more efficient engine if you keep it stock. Plus if you get a 97-01 MCV20 series 1MZ-FE, you have the option to S/C it. I'm not at all 1MZ-FE biased even though I drive 2 of them.
1) more boost friendly.. 9:1 compression instead of 10:1
2)cast iron block (rather than aluminum)
3)forged crank.. this thing is a mammoth hehe
4)broader torque curve (from dynos shown on this forum more torque in lower rpms- almost 2X)
5)3vz are cool!
also if you are worried about a supercharger soundlzrd over here is sending his car to cali this july to get a vortech v-2 kit made for all 3vz's. nuff said. if you have any questions id be more than happy to assist! :grin:
Yeah I've seen 3VZ-FE dynos and they have mad low end torque... I think I'd really love that!
I am looking to get another car... maybe upgrade to a V6 Camry or even go for a 95-99 Maxima SE!
I would love to stay loyal to Toyota, but the bottomline remains that the Maxima is a faster car (especially in 95-96) and they are just as rugged and bulletproof as Toyotas. However they are a little more expensive, so we'll have to see... time will tell.

I think the point with "cast iron block vs aluminum" is arguable. Iron block seems to be stronger while aluminum is a lot lighter.
Not to mention on the 92-93 3VZ it uses hydraulic fans vs the electric fan on the 94-96 1MZ.
Actually my 94 1MZ has a hydraulic fan... but you forgot to mention the 1MZ has extra technology over the 3VZ, such as crankshaft position sensors, camshaft position sensors, and its a few hundred pounds lighter.
yep i bet its so much lighter solely because of the block.
im thinking about getting a different cam profile. after all, the 3vz head is high flow compared to a majority of engines. its already got a lot of low end pull, so i think by optimizing higher rpms and keeping the intake valves open a little longer it would make a substantial increase without letting the low end go to crap.

Well, I can't afford a Supra right now and to make a long story short, I need a new car because I might have wrecked my car too badly.
If I decide not to get my car fixed up, I will either get a 92 V6 5-spd or a 95-96 Maxima SE 5-spd.

i can tell you that the 3vz fe is a very strong engine from what i have heard and experienced. driving it is a thrill, for a 1995 v6 toyota camry it still has it in it. going 40 k's and flooring it gives a great engine response, drops in 1st and the torque comes in at around 2.5 or 3'k. sounds gutsy for a 3 litre
i LOOOVE my 3VZ, its pretty powerhouse, its essentally a (tocoma, rav 4....) truck engine with yamaha heads! just get a manual if you can find one, otherwise do a tranny swap (the auto will pull hard, but ive heard that the manual is much lighter and responsive.
