1) Remove cover with a 5mm hex wrench
If you're removing that rear (firewall side) cover, remove the air cleaner assembly, thorttle body and air intake chamber
2) If you're working on the front (radiator side) or both covers, remove the coil connectors, coils and spark plugs
3) Detach the engine wiring harness from the left side of the engine, the number 3 timing belt cover, the rear of the engine and right-hand side
4) Remove the retaining nuts and sealing washers, the detach the cover(s). If the cover is stuck to the head, bump the end with a wood block and a hammer to har it loose. if that doesn't work try to slip a flexable putty knife between the head and the cover to break the seal.
*CAUTION* Don't pry and the cover-to-head joint or damage to the sealing surfaces my occur, leading to oil leaks after the cover is reinstalled

Just put a piece of wood against the covers and give a good love pat with a 4lb sledge. Then hit the other 3 sides. It'll pop right off and it won't break the seal. (if it's still in good shape before you hit it)
