Tranny Identification

Early this year I purchased a tranny that was "supposed" to be a 540e to replace one that we lost reverse in. When we went to do the swap we found the tranny is defintely NOT a 540 as it has a different housing, axle mounts, and the torque converter is a different design.

So right now I'm sitting on a transaxle that I have no Idea what the application is. I cannot seem to find any identification number on it that gives any kind of clue as to what it really is.

So how am I to I.D. this tranny?

im not sure how to tell what it is... but the a540 is the auto tranny for the v6 camrys gen 3. if it doesnt fit, then its the wrong one! im not sure where there is an identification on the actual tranny... im pretty sure there is a vin number on it. you can trace that to the type of car... i would say thats the best way. i dont think they are forged in there like on the motors.
