sluggish starts in the morning

ive been wondering bout y my 88 camry has a sluggish start in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon when engine is cold. it would crank but it b like sputtering after a few seconds later. then when i shut the engine off nd start it bak up it starts instantly. wth is the problem? mechanic said batter but he checked nd he was wrong. prob spark plugs?

sparks mayb...prolly something with the ignition...it could be sluggish jus cus its an old car and its cold

if you haven't changed your plugs in a while, it'd probably be a good idea. I'd also clean out your ICV valve and look into your starter.

My Accord used to start really slow whenever it was really cold outside and sat still overnight..

Check the start injector time s/w (cold start timing switch) and cold start injector.

Start injector time s/w is located on a neck that bolts to the right side of the cylinder head. The upper radiator hose goes into it.

Cold start injector is located on the intake manifold. Its in the middle right underneath where it says EFI.

2-1: 12 volts while start injector time s/w is closed and starter cranking.


Start injector time s/w

Points open above 35C (95F).

2-1: Approx. 20 - 40 ohms below 30C (86F).

2-1: Approx. 40 - 60 ohms above 40C (104F).

2-ground: Approx. 20 - 80 ohms



2-1 means pin 2 to pin 1 on the sensor.

2-ground means pin 2 to ground on the sensor.

All measurements are taken at the sensor.

My bet is on the start injector time s/w.

i dont know if this has anything to do with it, but my cam always seems to start better with more gas in the tank

if it really seems like its struggling in the cold and everything seems to be alright, then you can also try using different oil.....like, some winter blend or something....higher viscosity = less friction = easier starts
