No Break Lights!!

I have a 90 camry, the rear brake lights dont work, the tail lights and break lights are the same bulb according to the manual and theyre on all the time as tail lights but nothing happens as a break light when the breaks are stepped on,changed bulbs, changes fuse, still no break lights,am i reading the manual wrong and are the brake lights seperate from the tail lights, above the brake/taillight is the turnsignal, works fine, then on the movable part of the trunk at the bottom are tail/brake lights, tail lights are always on but nothing happens when breaks pressed, and above that is the reverse lights which work fine,so if the brake light and the tail light are the same light bulb why doesnt anything happen when i press the brake or am i missing something, dont want a ticket for this one, thanks

Check the brake light switch.

Its attached to the upper part of the brake pedal.

You'll have to get underneath the dash and look for it.

I don't know exactly what a toyota brake switch looks like but look on your brake pedal under the dash, there should be a switch that either gets depressed or released when the pedal is stepped on, it will have two wires going to it.

I work on tractors and big rigs mostly but the principles should be the same. One of the wires going into the switch should be hot (have power) all the time, the other should be hot when you press down on the pedal. You can check for power with a test light or a multimeter. Of course I am assuming that toyota doesn't use a switch that operates with ground instead of power. Hope this helps.

you probably have a bad connection or a broken wire. You need to get a wiring diagram and find out where the wires go and where the connections are.

Did you find out what the problem is?

I have a factory (Toyota) wiring manual for a 88 Camry, 90 should be the same.

So if you want the wiring diagrams just say so and I'll scan them for you.

Hey (your name here)

I have an 89 and could really use that wiring diagram. Brake lights don't work, power windows keep tripping the fuse which kills the blower fan also.

If you could scan and send I can stop turing on my tail lights every time I apply the brakes.

Thanks alot (you know who you are)
