excess ripple detected

what the hell does that mean? recently my battery has been crapping out on me in the morning so i took it to my boy who works in the automotive department at sam's club and had it tested and it was down to 336 CCA and when he tested the starter it with some other contraption and the print-out said there was an excess ripple detected, he has no idea what that means. so can anyone tell me what that is. also the next day, today, i took it to the dealership and they said the battery was borderline needing replacement. they said they can test the charging system for $62.50 and i said no and then they saw the 4AWG wire for my stereo and then became worried about blowing up my stereo system. i told them to just pull the fuse and there wouldnt be a problem but they were scared nonetheless. so back to my original question, what does "excess ripple detected" mean? it came up when my friend tested the starter.

It means the rectifier in the alternator is not properly changing the AC to DC.

Some of those checkers are programmed to be a little too picky. Just because there is excess ripple, does not mean it is toast. If you can still read around 14VDC coming from the alternator it is still good. As Redd Foxx used to say " a little ripple never
killed nobody."
I'm not sure what is available as a repair kit for your alt, if it checks out bad. It's an electronic part, they just go sometimes.

If you were getting 14v from the almost dead battery, the alt must have been connected and running. Sounds like it's OK. If you want to check it again, just put the voltmeter across the battery with the car running. Chances are if the charging light didn't come on, it's alright.

That is the most messed up thing i've ever read. How is a car going to start with the battery disconnected?

battlekat49:just get some standard gauges so you can keep an eye on your motor.
i have sunpro gauges(mechanical oil pressure, volt.,amp) cause it's all i could afford at the time. and i'm happy with them. i plan to get one for my oil temp and a pyrometer but those are in the future

he most likely meant start the car and disconnect the negative terminal, if the car still runs with the battery disconnected the alternator is ok

so you're saying to test the battery with the engine running and to take note if the light in the dash comes on for the battery. if it stays off it's ok, if it comes on... the alternator is messed up?

i dont know what you mean by test the battery, but you can try starting the car and disconnecting the battery, the car should idle no problem with the battery disconnected (mine will) but if there is an alternator problem it will probably die or start running funny
