smog problem

On my 92 2.2 liter I failed smog because the timing was off and it had too high NOx. I fixed the timing, thanks to 88LE's instructions. It was set at about 18 and I set it to 10. Would the timing being off cause the NOx to be too high or do I have a 2nd problem to find?

Maybe cleaning the EGR or getting a new one might help.

If it was the cat, i think HCs would be high. Nox tends to be EGRs. If the other readings are low, and only Nox is high, I would not think it was the cat.
