Question Key wont turn...power locks work.

OK. Another problem I'm having is that the key wont turn in the drivers side door. The power locks still work. this means that I have to push the button on the door to lock the doors when I get out...and when I climb in I have to walk around to the passenger side to unlock using the key. ???? Anyone had this happen before?

I tried a little WD40 a few months ago but it was halfhearted and I didn't know if I should, so I didn't spray much at all. needless to say it did nothing. Should I try that type of thing again...or am I going to have to take that darn door apart? (I did that once on the back door for a power window problem and it's a messy, pain in the butt.)

Any ideas?

If it just won't turn, try spraying in a small amount of graphite (sp?) into the lock. It has worked for me several times when i have had that problem, including in the ignition.

Does it not turn in any direction? What about applying a little force when turning back and forth?

I had a spare key that wasn't the correct template key and it screwed things up for me. Had to get a new set of locks.

Never oil a lock!!! It attracts dirt and the locking pins will stick.

If you're going to try graphite you need to clean all the oil out of the lock. Hog it down with contact cleaner or brake cleaner. Something that dries fast and leaves no residue. Let the lock dry out and warm up(Most spray cleaners evaporate so quickly they can cause condensation). Then you can try the graphite in the lock. Use a lock grade graphite.

Good Luck,

Mike

Same problem - it was my key

I experienced the same problem, using a spare key all the time. Then I tried my original dealer key, and it worked. It seems that the key gets worned out at the edges and didn't catch on the lock cylinder. This was my problem I experienced, was able to insert key, but couldn't turn it in either direction, hope that helps .

Of keys and graphite...

Ok. so I'll clean the lock out this weekend and use some lock grade graphite...I also DO have a spare key...it just didn't occur to me that that might be the problem as the key works in the other door and the ignition.

The problem is that the key wont turn. We've tried enough force that we worry the key will break. Sumtin' is frozen.

Thanks all!!

Cool

More than likely the key is damaged, try the spares, or have a dealer cut you a new one for $10.
