Did you like actually throw a rod into the engine or did a rod break?

i spun a bearing and didnt realize it until my rod broke off the crank shaft and put a hole in my block hitting my a/c compressor knocking it into my t-stat housing and bent the pully on the a/c compressor. but atleast it didnt blow up. but it all did happen on the expressway.

If you're not in a rush, get a cheap old engine and rebuild it. That way you know exectly how good the engine is. You can also build it up a bit before putting it in
