I recently emailed burien and asked what they do about the MAP sensor problem and I got this reply:

"We use a map sensor off a turbo"

Hmm..this is neither reassuring nor informative, I didn't think turbos came with map sensors. I am going to email him back but I just wanted to run this by you guys unless I am mistaken or something.

Why not?

The ECU needs to know how much air is going into the engine so that it can add the proper amount of fuel. Thats what a MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor is for.

The stock MAP sensor on a 5S-FE is not calibrated for seeing boost. If it sees boost (positive manifold pressure) it'll trip out and fuel cut.

Burien Toyota's solution to this is to use a MAP sensor from a MR2 Turbo and 360cc injectors from a 2JZ-GE (engine in MKIV Supra).

Joe (karma) is running that MAP sensor.

I have a 3S-FE so I have a AFM. No MAP sensor.
