timingbelt

after installing a new timing belt and water pump my 2.2 camry smells hot. Also when I replaced the belt the ignition timing was retarded by about 20 deg. Any clues? I used a chilton book for reference while doing the belt.

unless you mess w/ the distributor, the timing might be off.

dont forget that when using inductive timing light, short out the thingy at the little box.

Does your car lack its normal power at lower rpms? If so I would guess the belt is probably a tooth or two off.

es is right , your probably a tooth off. Was the timing mark even on the grid? If not you are for sure off with your cam timing, wont hurt much just run real poochy.

Sounds like you didn't align the crank and/or cams properly before installing the belt.

^ Not all 5S-FEs have the sensor (crank position sensor) that your talking about.

5S-FEs with DIS (distributorless ignition system) have the sensor.

The early 5S-FEs have a distributor.
