I searched for my problem and found some information but not everything.
I found out that I put too much oil in my engine and thats why white smoke came out. So I changed my oil and the car runs find the only problem is the engine oil light flashes. If anyone could help me that would be great! I just dont want to wreck my car I cannot afford that. Does anyone know what I need to do because of what I did and I am just afriad of the affects of me putting in too much oil.
Also since I am posting a thread anyway I was wondering if my eletrical problem is a big problem. When I press on my brake the R on lights up like I am in reverse. Kinda weird and I didnt see any threads dealing with thatone either.
First Question is priority since the light thing has been there for a long time. Its just I had a used transmission put in and the guy said I had an electrical problem and that would cause my tranny to go faster.
No I am not leaking oil.. Just when I start the car but for a little bit it was blinking and sometimes staying on for like 10 minutes and then dissapear agian. Its not though. I just want to make sure I am not hurting my car by driving it to school and what not.
I had the excact problem with the braking light coming on while in reverse...check your reverse lights...(i cant remeber how i resolved it) I believe i got a dealer to fix the problem, something related to the fuses
It doesnt matter the gear. Lets say I am in drive and I press on the brake pedal. My brake lights come on but so does the R on my dash. But the D is still on because I am in drive. So ya its kinda odd.
I am though really conserned about the oil thing. The light no longer comes on but I wanna make sure I did not and am not damaging my gaskets or anything. I know I smell some burning oil but I am guessing that is because I spilled some on my engine. please help and thanks!
As far as the oil overfill problem is concerned, a lot depends on how much it was overfilled and how far it was driven in this condition. 1 quart over shouldn't be a big deal. More than that could cause severe engine wear. When a car is way overfilled with oil (2 quarts or more), the crankshaft sits in the oil in the pan and as the crankshaft turns, it whips the oil in to a foam. The oil in the pan is made to be picked up by a suction device called "the oil pick-up" near the bottom of the pan and be pumped and sprayed throughout the engine and it's vital parts. When the oil is whipped in to a foam, it can not lubricate as well as pure oil. Foams contain air bubbles and air does not lubricate well. If any damage was done, it is already done. If the car still runs well, I would just drive it and check the oil level periodically. If you want to find out if any damage was done for your piece of mind, then take it to someone and ask them to do a compression test.
You can use brake-clean on a cold engine to clean up the spilled oil. You can buy a spray can of it at Wal-mart for around $2.50. Spray it where you spilled the oil and where you think it dripped. Give it about 10 minutes to dry completely and then take the car for a ride. See if the smell goes away.
As far as the electrical problem is concerned, I think that is totally unrelated to the oil problem issue. If this problem occurred as soon as the new transmission was put in, I would take it back to the shop that installed it and tell them about it. It should be their responsibility to fix. If not, and it's been doing this for a while with no other ill effects, I would just leave it. Electrical problems like this can be expensive to trace down.
The electrical issue has been since we got the car in January. Umm the guy who put the new tranny in said that I have an electrical problem he wasent specific and but he said that an electrical problem can add to tranny wear.
Ok I will do a compression test and check. Today I didnt notice the smell of any oil. But I think I will still clean it. It wasent driven long we drove it home very slow it was about 3-6 miles not too far or long. It seems to run just like before maybe better because I have a good tranny that isnt slipping. I think I am getting less gas milage. Not too sure but it seems like it might be.
Lets say I do the compression testand the compression is off. Then what do I do to fix what I did?
Thank you so Much FOR YOUR HELP!
If the compression is low, then ask the technician to do the test "dry" and "wet". Dry is just a normal compression test; wet is where they will put a teaspoon of oil down into each cylinder and then recheck the compression. If this wet test raises the compression, then the piston rings and the sides of the cylinder walls are worn and it would be time to rebuild the engine or go with a new or rebuilt engine. If the wet test does not raise the compression (on an engine with low compression), then the problem is either valves or a head gasket problem. These things, although not cheap, are still a lot less expensive to repair than a worn out engine. But, I think you are putting the cart before the horse. If the car is running OK now and is not using an excessive amount of oil, then the engine is probably fine. I would just drive it.
You never did say how many miles the engine has on it. That too can figure in to things.

Check the oil pressure switch, plug, and wiring.
Its located on the top right corner of the cylinder head.
At 145,000 miles you will have some normal engine wear. If the car is runing good right now and you feel the power is adequate, you could take the conservative approach. That would be, do nothing but check the oil consumption after say 200 miles, then again at 500 miles and then again after 1000 miles. If there is no significant oil consuption at 1000 miles, then it is probably OK. I would then just continue to drive it and check the oil periodically . If it's worth it to you to have the compression check done for piece of mind, and it's worth the $100 or so it would cost, then my all means have it done. Remember, it's not going to repair anything; it will just tell you the overall condition of the engine.
