is it a good idea to use both 2-way any 3-way speakers in your car to get the correct ambience and sound level?? i was planning to use only the pioneer 2-ways until a salesman suggest this to me . ps: has anyone experimented with 18" subs??

Well....I am not the person to ask about 2 and 3 ways....component person all the way here. However, when it comes to 18in subs....unless you are desiring to start to compete in audio shows, I would say stay away. For daily driving I just think they lack that solid, crisp bass. Plus, with the right setup you can get the same DBs with smaller speakers and take up less room.

i reccommend two good quality 12s or sumthing...all u need
as for 3-ways... if ur gonna get a sub u dont really need 3 ways... cuz the bass(low-range) is all covered by the subs and the midrange and high pitch soundz is covered by the two fronts and rears... btw get front splits... so u get more clarity

Ya....I really recomend components (what I am assuming he was meaning by "front-splits". As long as they are properly positioned and have enough power....they are difficult to beat when it comes to SQ and staging. I think you would eventually kick yourself if you are really trying to build up your front sound-stage and buy coaxles instead.

About the 18" sub. I knew a guy who was planning to compete for clarity with his system. He put components in the front 4 6by9's in the back of his VW golf (it was a nice car rims and everything). He also dropped about three V12 alpine amps (completely took out his back seat to house the amps in a case), two digital caps, and an 18" JLW6. It is the nicest system i have ever heard. The 18 was f'ing huge, but extremely clear. He could max out his receiver and the quality was still great inside the car. I say 18's are nice if you have the money to buy one and power it!!
Now I have not heard the W6 18...if he had clarity I am impressed. The majority of 18s I have heard were Cerwin Vega Strokers...which are SPL beasts. Just nasty. Anyways, I agree with what was said. You need to build a system that is suited for your application. Do you want just a little bump in your trunk to fill out the bottom end, and bass in your face ground shaker, or a SPL monster for competitions?

Yep....with 15s you get closer and closer to clarity. I just don't know. I am pritty much convinced that I will never go to any other size than 12s....just for the sole fact that I easily outhit many 2x 15in systems, and b/c 10s just don't get those low notes I love (IMO). I say save some space, buy a set of power-hungry 12s, and amp the HE(double- hockey-sticks)out of them.

I've got a pair of 10" Polk subs in small, sealed enclosures. They're getting about 150 watts each. They hit fairly hard when turned up loud, but they're still really musical. I don't try to rattle windows out of houses as I drive by, so this set up suits me fine.
If you want a ton of thump without turning your trunk into a big speaker, go w/Tmanana's suggestion w/a pair of 12" in a ported or bandpass box and run like 600 watts into them. That should be more than enough to wake up everyone on your street at night.
I should have added that they'll take up a good chunk of your trunk, but you'll still have SOME usable space. W/my 2-10" boxes, I have enough room for two hockey bags and 4 sticks passing thru into the passenger cabin, plus a little extra room for shoes or jackets, etc.

as for the speakers, i'm not trying to set up any staging for any type of competition at all. I just want clear, loud, powerful, bassful, music coming through all 4 speakers. are 2-ways , 3ways,or 4ways, recommended for this most often? emphasis on bass.

I'm not an audio expert, but seperates are better than 2/3/4 ways because the component speaker don't have poles coming thru the middle of the "woofer". That takes away from some of the sound quality and bass. Components also have high quality crossovers that work better than the ones found in regular speakers. Go here for more info:

ok, forget 18's, i want clarity with loud bass, how about 15's??

I would suggest Earthquake 12's (if you demand 12's)
And as much as you say you dont want competition level sound, go with some components (fozzy, eq, focal(nuff dollars), or MBQuart). Ive had to date about 15-20 sets of coax/comp. speakers and NOTHING beats a component set. The sound is divided properly, AND when HI's come from the same area as LOW's........It sucks. With components, you can get the midbass from the kickpanels and the highs closer to your ears for pure sound detail. Plus when you get subs, lame coaxials will be drowned out.
Just a thought carnale...
