replacing timing belt....

hey guys, i just got quoted at the dealership to get my timing belt replaced. Now i'm just wondering if i should just get the belt? or the whole timing belt kit? And what's a tensioner? Do i need to purchase it so they can install it?

I called up Toyota last week for a timing belt and water pump replacement and they were all around $600. One dealership quoted $630 for the belt and pump, plus thermostate and assesory belt.

If you change the timming belt, you should change the water pump also. I had a water pump lock up and it will take out the timming belt

You need to remove the following to get the timing belt out:
Passanger side motor mount
Top belt cover
Under engine plastic cover
Crank pulley-need pulley puller
Lower belt cover
Don't know how hard it is to do with engine in the car.
You can get a rebuild water pump for around CAN$70.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. But i don't think i was more specific in my post earlier. I'M NOT doing the timing belt myself. Somebody is doing it for me in their garage. He told me to get the belt at the dealer and i'm just wondering if i should get the whole nine yards or just the timing belt and the water pump. Thanks.

Do as much as you can while the cover is off. Also check the main seal on the crank to see if it got hard and brittle already, change it if it is. Spin all the rollers and replace them if they're hard to turn or not running smooth.

when i changed my timing belt i replaced the tensioner pulley and some other pulley.

i recommend you change, or have it changed, while you're at it.
also have a look at the other belts (alternator, steering pump)

Can you just slide the old belt off and slide the new one on in the same place? I mean replace the tensioner of course...

you probably can slide the old power steering belt and alternator belt off if you loosen the adjustment bolts. i don't think it is possble to slide the old timing belt off and replace the tensioner with out taking off the crank shaft bolt and take crank shaft pulley out to remove the lower timing belt cover.

If this is the 2nd time you're getting the timing belt, then yes, do the water pump too.
