V6 Camry Timing

I own a 88 Camry with the 2VZFE motor.
Im having problems with the timing.
The motor pings under acceleration and wants to stall when it's hot at idle in a drive gears (its ok in P or N).

I wanted to see what the timing was set to, but i can't seem to figure out how.
I can see the timing block with 15-10-5-0 etc on it, but there is not marker or something to see whats it's actually set too.

Also, because of access, I have got the timing light on the 2nd cylinder spark plug (Front bank Left). Is this ok?

Also, is there any electrical things that require doing like shorting pins or simething on the DIAG connector?

Performance is still ok off the line, could be better, and it is hesitant WOT.

Our premium petrol here is 98 RON, 87 MON minimum. I am using the regular version, so the petrol I have in the car now will have a lower rating. Is this acceptable?

Thanks heaps.

The timing light needs to be hooked up to #1.

Thankyou 88LE.
Any reason why she wants to stall after it gets hot at idle only in a drive gear (not P or N)?? Retarded Timing?
Because it sure feels flat under acceleration.

Also..are there actual permanent notches to read the timing?
Because all that I see is a block thats says 15..10..5..0 or sumin like that, but i cant see any mark which shows WERE it's actually sitting.!!

There should be notches underneath each number.

Theres also a notch on the crank pulley.

Thankyou. Ill have a look for it soon.
Would the mark on the pulley (not the fixed marks with the numbers) worn off if i can't see it, or is that unlikely?

Do you think that could be the cause of my low idle problems?

Thanks 88LE.

The mark (notch) on the crank pulley is cut into the pulley.

So unless you took a file or grinder to your crank pulley, the notch will not wear off.

The reason why your not seeing the mark is cos you had the timing light hooked up to #2. It must be hooked up to #1.
