Engine timing

I just checked my timing and it was at 15 degrees!!! This is not what i expected because the car hasnt been running right and is hesitant. Could the timing be too high?? And if so would that reduce performance?
Normally i have thought the retarded timing makes for lower performance, but could this higher timing (5 above normal) be causing reduced performance.

When using regular petrol, it pings under WOT. Premium doesn't ping.

Thanx.

Advancing the timing usually gives better performance to a certain point (before it starts pinging).

I would set the timing to what its suppose to be or keep running premium.

Pinging/detonation is not good.

Yes i did.

I have now put the timing back to 10. It seems to like it alot more. The power delivery feels a bit smoother and there is no pinging.

hi,
i am having a similar problem but when i tried to jump the short to fix the timing the engine tried to correct it but the timing stayed the same. any special instructions on resetting the timing? I have also been having a ticking noise. could that be caused by the advanced timing?

I would carefully go over the procedure step-by-step.

Here's the step-by-step procedure provided by 88LE:

First off I want to apoligize to everyone for resurrecting a dead thread, but I want to know if advancing timing on a gen 3 with the 1mzfe will actually give any better performance, and what should I advance it to? I ran a search of "advanced timing" and this seemed to be the most helpful result so far. Any further help would be greatly appreciated.

^ Theres no easy way to advance the ignition timing on a 1MZ-FE.

1MZ-FE has DIS (distributorless ignition system). So theres no distributor you can turn to adjust the timing.

The ignition timing on a 1MZ-FE is controlled by the ecu and determined by sensors (cam and crank position sensor).

Thank you, that's as simple a response as I could have hoped for.
