I don't know exactly what part(s), but i use a product thats called Steam and it comes in a can. You spray it on, wait a few minutes, and use a hose to wash it off. After that, the engine will be so clean, you'll be able to eat off it

jus cover the alternator and the ignition modules( well its recommended to cover this stuff but U dont really have to) it was engineered and built to take on water
other than that go for it, spray away with a nice pressure washer and once U done washing turn the car on and let running for a while to boil away all the water

I cleaned/washed the engine bay every time I do the oil/filter change since I don't like the extra used oil trapped in the engine cross member and exhaust heat shields.
I have a water filtration system in my garage and I used the soft water (no soap or other cleaning solutions) to wash the engine compartment.
After spraying the engine (avoiding a direct hit on the alternator) at regular water pressure, I just let it sit for awhile (~ 30 minutes) and then start/drive around the blocks. When it dries, no white spots at all. The key to a clean engine is to wash/wipe it regularly (starting when you first got the vehicle).
My neighbor always says, it doesn't look like a 7-year old engine and cleaner than a brand new (his 2004 Sienna XLE Limted) engine.
