i called UPFD and spoke to both RJ and Matt, and they are getting a new shipment in today. they said they will ship it off this friday (better!! i read from solaraguy.com forum that people had to bug them alot for them to get the extension). cost was $100 shipped and i should get it by next week thurs or friday. sweet!!!
also my friend here in phily agreed to help install it for me. maybe i'll treat him to dinner afterwards at chinatown or something
can't wait to get it installed! although i won't see much an improvement here in phily bec the weather has been in the low 40
s. but once i go back to TX...nice. i'll be able to tell
^^ hey no problems. i was reading other people who made their own custom CAI and they spent on average $70-$100 for it. i thought, hey w/ all the work finding the parts, maybe having to bend metal etc, it's easier to buy it all made and done from UPFD.
i can't wait!!! i hope they are sticking w/ their schedule and shipping it off this friday.
for those who had the short-ram intake, then changed it to a CAI...how does the sound change? any difference from SRI to CAI? louder? deeper sounding? you like it better (sound-wise) as a CAI?

hey paradizecityz, thanks for the offer! my friend has an auto shop in chinatown, so that's why i said i'll treat him to dinner at chinatown afterwards he better not mess up!
rapsux2000, so you liked the extension! sweet, makes me want it even more now! how was the sound different after the extension vs when it was just a short-ram? any difference? it sounded pretty good beforehand, so if it's even a bit better than it's all good.
can't wait!!!

hey rapsux2000, checked out your cam. nice car dude! definitely ...275hp at crank! awesome!
where did you run the injen filter for the extension? from the pics, looks like behind the driver front well?
did you have to make any cuts or modifications to make it fit on your camry? or was the installation fairly simple...just asking ahead of time so my friend and i will not run into any "unexpected" problems/delays.
you can PM if if you'd like

I would think that you should notice a difference. It may be very subtle though. The sound will be completely different. I thought the short-ram sounds like a vacuum but the CAI is deep.
my friend gave me a link, and the .com store has aem cai for camrys (96-02). it costs 247+shipping. my question is, is aem a respectable company? anyone using one on their car?
hey userlain, i agree w/ you. my short-ram intake did sound like a vacuum especially at high rpms (above 3,000). I liked it ok. but the CAI will sound deep! SWEET! , and w/ my rippmods headers and greddy evo catback exhaust, it'll make my car sound even better
hey toyotaholic, AEM is a really respected company. I think injen and AEM are the 2 best ones for intake imo. but they only have cai for V6 engines. that's why alot of people (including myself) bought the short-ram intake...to find out it was mainly a sound upgrade only. Especially in TX heat, i didn't seen any gains
But now that people are making their own cai, or w/ short-ram already, buying/making the extension to become a CAI.
if you have a V6, then go get the CAI and forget the extension...you don't need it

On a Gen 4, the UPFD CAI Extension doesn't bolt on to the stock frame hole, it's slightly off. On a Solara for some reason fits great. I'm not sure if I did it wrong but I angled it all the possible ways that I could and still no luck. Anyways if you tighten the clamp good enough it's already a tight enough fit for it to stay in place.
Anyways the sound is similar to the short ram but it's just magnified so you hear it better.
As for the performance, well I don't want to get into SRI VS CAI so ya let's just say gain is hardly noticeable, more cosmetic. Let's leave it at that.
Good luck with the install, I have a pic of it on my CarDomain if you want to see how it fits.
Toyotaholic: That AEM gen 4 Intake was cancelled, (never produced, and never will be.) A lot of sites just made waiting lists for them. I talked to AEM many times regarding the issue. They wanted to make it, but a lack of demand made them cancel the project. They only sell gen 3 intakes.
Cman2000: You will have to cut some metal, to get the extension to fit well. There's a link at solaraguy.com on exactly what needs to be done. I'll PM you a link later.
bustarice: nice install. checked out your cardomain webpage. nice cam too man, so it won't fit perfectly? but with the clamps on tight, there is no problem with it working fine? yeah, the guys at UPFD said they designed the CAI extension for solaras, so he had no idea what mods need to be done for a camry.
rapsux2000: man, so i need to cut some of the extension! oh well. yeah if you can find that link for me, that'll be great...thanks man!

hey bustarice. forgot to ask. did you have to cut any part of the extension to make it fit, or just jammed it in there, screwed it as tightly as possible and hoped for the best?
