Usually its because there IS a bulb out. Try replacing the 3rd brake light bulb even if it still works, sometimes thats the issue.

Well, I'm just going by experience...

I too had the annoying light on and checked/replaced every bulb on the outside including the liscense plate lights - with no luck. So I changed the 3rd brake bulb even though it still worked and that corrected the problem. Sounds like you have the same symptoms, but only you can know for sure.

The light will not go out untill the problem is remedied, or you remove the actual light from the dash - I would reccomend that as a last resort.

If the check light, light goes on ONLY after you press the brake, it is a BRAKE light out. And I had it go on once when I could not find an out bulb, turns out it was the 3rd brake light only intermittently going out.

Did you use a conventional bulb or an LED replacement for that bulb ?

Sometimes that warning will go on before a light is blown, like a pre-warning. Give it some time and see if a bulb blows. If now, then it's gotta be an error with the sensor. I can't see why it would stay on if all the bulbs a fine.

Make sure the bulb you replaced was the right one; not just a bulb that fit the socket. The sensor senses wattage, not voltage, so if you use another bulb with a different wattage the sensor will go on every time you step on the brakes. The correct bulb for your 96 Camry high mounted brake light is a 921. Also check all the brake light sockets themselves. Sometimes the contacts can get corroded or bent. The last thing to check is the harness in the trunk near the hinge on the driver's side. This area is notorious for having a broken wire inside this loom caused by all the bending when opening and closing the trunk.
