Nice or Rice? How about totally stealth!

Before the Nice or Rice thread turned into a flame war, I was looking at the mufflers being proposed for the dude's gen4 Camry, when I thought of the following:

The bling-bling effect of the fartcan-style mufflers is nice, and the ones that are well built sound pretty good. But for those of us who want to go stealth and look stock while having the sound that makes people turn around and go "WTF was that?!", how about welding in a Flowmaster Delta FLow or 40 series? Or how about Walker Super Turbos?

My feeling here is that these are good mufflers that sound deep, are not extremely expensive, and look totally stock to the non-discerning eye. You could even paint it all flat black to boost the stealth factor Also, a deep muffler makes a big four-cylinder (2.2 liters [gen3.5] counts as pretty big for a four) sound surprisingly good.

I may do this to my car in the Spring, if I can keep enough $$ aside from signing up for my NYS teacher certification tests (4 of those fuckers at 90 bucks a head!). If anyone has already done this, I'd love to hear a sound clip. (Someone who used to post here had a FLowmaster on his gen2... cant remember the name or if he had a sound clip tho)

Just another point of view...

Steve

walker and lukey muffles sound very nice. they tend to use straight though or a sleeved straight though (same thing with a silencer) so flow is quite good. just be careful of the ones that dont say theyre 100% stainless teel because if they dont, its probably stainless shell with mild steel coated aluminium (or some other cheaper stuff) inside.

Good idea, only problem that I see is that the exhaust will dump under the car (I assume) and this will make it very loud indise the car, which may tend to be annoying.

Cool

Flowmasters are bleh. Like I said over there Borla makes a lot of great oval mufflers. Many of the higher end companies offer ovals of differing styles.

I dunno man, I had Flowmaster Delta 40's on my Monte. You gotta be feelin that tinny pop with a sick cam lope sound tho. ...granted thats also 8cyl with almost 900chp farting thru two seperate cans.

Borlas are good too, had em on the Vette for a while, but they got a flat muffeled sound

Its easy to identify both Borlas and FMs from just the sound, most fart cans don't really have an identifyable sound other than "fart can"

FM does make "bullet style" straight thru mufflers that look like N1 style

It would dump in the stock location- all this entails is cutting out the old muffler, welding the new one in place, and welding a tip on the muffler b/c the outlet is not very long at all. The rest of the exhaust is untouched, unless you were doing a cat-back or header-back install.

This sucks on gen3's, idk about you gen4/5 ppl b/c the center pipe leading back to the muffler is welded into the side of the muffler! There's no real inlet! Interesting setup- so you need custom fabbing here too

toysrme I too am a big fan of Borla- stainless steel, million-mile warranty, nice sound... but also big bucks. I'm a college kid on a tight budget, and Flows or Walkers would be my first picks.

bluemeanie I'd love to see some pics of that old Monte if ya got em

i've got a flo-pro on my gen 3 2.2L. its basically an "economy" flomaster 40... its not exactly the same, but it sound prettys good imo... i got a polished tip thats about 2.75 inches or so, and it doenst look too bad either... i got the muffler, tip, the fabbing that 87Camry5Speed was talkin about and a new flex pipe, all welded for 300 bucks and some change... i thought it was a decent deal...

by that definition, i guess i'm rice...

i like the way mine sounds, but that and a short ram intake are the only "power" mods ive got... it beats my g/f's stock 94 5sfe by about two or three inches to 60 but the root cause for me getting mine was b/c my stock muffler clogged and took out my flex pipe, so i opted for the less expensive flo-pro over another stock one

^^^Flat black all the way. This man speaks the gospel.

Someone made a sound vs. speed argument- Some good aftermarket mufflers, like Delta flows arent that loud. My friend had one on his old BMW ('86 325) and it was nice- not too loud but you still def. noticed it. Also there's the matter of personal taste- ppl will look at my car and rightly figure, "well, its a Camry, its slow," but I'm going to make it sound the way I want it to sound.

OMG? Are you kidding? Those are so fuckin ugly. As toysrme says, Get an oval steel tipped one. They are blingy and they look nice. Those fart cans ones sound bad and look bad. Unless your pushing that much why the fuck would you want to get it?

I've got a magnaflow muffler and 2.5in catback piping on my 89 gen2. Its got the 3SFE and sounds nice and deep, no popping or farting. Above 4K it makes a pretty nice growling sound as well.
