I just bought a 2005 Camry with a hood defector. My friend told me that it could damages the hood because the hood will be deformed where the contact points are.
It won't deform the hood. However, the mounting clips will tend to scrap the paint away making it more prone to rust. I've decided that given the alternative of a pitted hood, I'd rather have rust spots under the deflector where it's not noticeable.
We had one (Toyota defelctor - not after market) on our 99 Camry when we got it. Never had one before so we were going to take it off but didn't get around to it right away and then we found that we really liked it. We saw on several occasions that when a stone hit the deflector it went up and over the roof - avoiding the hood and windshield. (We never had a problem with the defeltor for the 4 years we had the car, took it through car washes, brushed lots of snow off it, etc. - no rust, no problems with the hood)
When we got our 03 Camry it was one of the few extras we ordered since now we knew what the benefits were. This past Aug we got an 05 Matrix and got one for it too.
One added benefit is that with so many Camrys out there it does help (sometimes) going to the car in the parking lot.
i got them with my 2003 gen 5 camry...its clipped on the edge of the bonnet...
when i took them off around 10 months i saw marks...i had a talk on other forums and people said the clips should never touch the paint becuase there should be clear thin plastic strips to go between where the clip touches the paint...my bonnet protector was installed incorrectly as someone didn't use the plastic strips...
i went back to toyota to demand repairs because the protector has been installed incorectly and of course though the time of having my car the protector would have been pushed around slightly when washing my car...the protector has 6 clips. 2 around each headlight edge and 2 clipped onto the grill...the 2 grill clips are metal and yeah they chipped the paint...
toyota refused to replace my hood because it has been over a year...it has been too long to warrant or some crap...
if you do decide to use one, make sure you check under it all hte time, as things tend to get stuck under there....and since you live in Canada, I'd presume that you're going to get salt stuck under there too....
and also, if you keep one on your car for a good amount of time, and you park your car outside a lot....depending on the color of your car, you'll notice a difference in the color of the paint as the rest of your car fades a bit from the sun exposure

i like mine and where the clips mount to the hood i used the 3m doubel sided tape first off to prevent scratching and one side kept coming loose with bumps so it prevents both
Better than defelctors would be to install a paint protetion film.

I plan to buy one and use it only on long trips [700 miles]and remove it when I return home. Also waxing the hood often will eliminate the deflector chance of scratching the surface.

Plastic bug deflector can and disadvantage is a small scratch only.
I wondered about the defector too. My 95 has seen a lot of gravel and the hood is really chipped and pitted. I've also had three front windows.
This thread is interesting to read, I have to try one out on the 95 and the 01.
