How does a 1MZ work?

I need some info on how the 1MZ ignition system works...it doesn't have a distributor, so can someone tell me how it works...diagrams would be nice!

Which year 1mz-fe? The earlier versions had a different ignition setup and im not too familiar with it..

The later version (1999), which i have, uses a wasted spark setup with 3 coils. There is one coil for every two cylinders, each cylinder is joined to its companion (1-4, 2-5, 3-6). The cylinders fire together even though one is on the exhaust stroke and one is on the intake stroke. Also, even later model 1mz-fe had their ignitor on the coil instead of the firewall like mine.

wow, someone wanna post an engine bay pic of a 1999 style 1mz? Seems like more of a pain in the ass than the 1994 version where there is one coil per/cyl...

haha...I dont see how its more of a pain in the ass??? There are 3 coils instead of 6.

Here is a picture of mine:



The 3 coil wires go to the back of the motor where they have regular spark plug boots.
