So yeah as many of you know, i broke eight fingers over the summer because of the crappy rods that hold up the hood on my gen3. The hood came down and eight of my fingers (spared the thumbs....).
so last night i was cleaning up some of the oil i spilled (from a vertical oil filter..arg) in the engine bay when, as if i hadnt learned my lesson, the hood came down on my head. I think my camry wants to end my life. So anyways to the point...is there any replacement for these rods??? Im not a huge fan of pain...
you can take off your hood before working on the engine or buy gas struts that are used on most gen 3 hood its either gas or air i dunno but all i know is I dont need a crappy rod holding the hood up, with that in mind...if you like using a crappy rod to hold the hood up get a carbon fiber hood...it should ease the pain if it comes down on your fingers cause its lighter weight..hehe
Hit up the dealership. They will have replacement ones for your car. Although they'll prolly cost $50+ But you can replace them by just removing a few nuts. Shouldn't be a big project.
And a Carbon Fiber hood will just inflick JDM style pain! It's 10x as bad because they have a high pain tolerance! JDM YO!

my hood shocks went out a coupl months ago. . i got a hood prop. . there nice!!! sturdy too
all I gotta say is do something soon. . you're camry is scaring me
I was waist deep in my trunk moving stuff around and the wind pushed the trunk down, so the clip hit me square in my spine. None the less I couldn't get the next body in there. Teach me to be a good sumaritan.
Back on topic though: If you know someone or can find someone that has a gas shock to hold their hood up on the same model as yours, measure it. Get as many details from it as you can. As gas shocks for hoods and trunks are relatively universal. Saying that, you can find a deal if you put in the research. A junk yard should be able to hook you up also
You can purchase the rods/struts that hold up the hood as aftermarket parts that should be a lot cheaper than the dealership ones. I would guess about $25 a side. These are easy to replace yourself. In the meantime, an old mechanics trick when working on cars with bad support rods, is to open the hood all the way and then take a vicegrip and clamp it on the top portion of the small diameter rod piece that goes inside the larger diameter portion. That should hold it up while you work on the car.
You think that's cursed? lol u have it lucky. It seems as if everything is drawn to hitting my car. I'm afraid to even drive it b/c someone will hit it. It get's hit at every party I go to, well atleast the last three, got hit at school, a deer hit it, etc. Just keeps getting better and better. Costing more to fix it than I paid for it
but that sucks about your fingers and your head, just stick something in there to keep it from coming down, like a 2x4 or something

If you try the dealer for replacement hood struts, they'll be about $77 each. I hit up AutoZone and got universal ones for $30-something each. I had to do some drilling on the brackets to get 'em to fit, tough. But I did get a lifetime warranty!
