bowlofturtle,
The gasket I am referring to is the converter to Y pipe flange gasket. There is a gasket at the front of the converter and one at the back. There are also 2 other gaskets that can leak. The y Pipe bolts to the exaust manifold flanges and uses the round gaskets there as well. When I installed my Y pipe the front exuast manifold to manifold flange was leaking and I used a new gasket, I simply diodnt have it torqued down enough, tightened it down while it was hot and stopped the leak.
An easy way to find leaks is start your car in the morning when its cold and hold your hand an inch away from the exaust manifold to downpipe flange on your car and if it is leaking you will feel air/exhaust hitting your hand, it wont take to long for the pipes to get hot enough to burn you so be sure you don't actually TOUCH the pipes with the back or palm of your hand. You can also reach under the car where the catalyitic converter bolts to the down pipe at the front of the converter and the "mid pipe" behind the converter and feel for exaust leaks pulsing on your hand...again without touching the pipes! Just hold your hand an inch or 2 away from the joints and you'll feel the leaks. If you get under the car with it running make sure it's on a level surface with the wheels blocked the parking brake ON and the transmission in PARK!! Only reach under long enough to feel for the leak.
