After replacing my stock stereo, the airbag warning came on because the battery was disconnected for too long. So in case of an accident, will the airbags deploy even with the warning light on? and has anyone gotten it resetted at a dealer? and know the estimated cost?
take it to the dealer and they will ask for your soul, or 500 dollars...
AIR BAG LIGHT FIXED/RESET. There is an article on this forum, GEN 3 AIRBAG or GEN 3 AIR BAG try searching for it. I was able to reset the unit in 15 minutes (10 trying to print the picture!!) at no cost.
Use any chassis screw for a ground, and don't put your head in front of the steering wheel.
were you able to locate the posting that had the diagram?
There is little chance of deployment but due to the locations of the components you may find yourself in a position where your head is up against the front of the airbag, I'm just saying that you shouldn't put your head in front of the airbag (read the sun visor) especially when your resetting the system. Chances of deployment: perhaps one in a million.
Just don't press your head against the airbag when resetting the cpu.
Well i've found the thread and read it, it said that DLC1 is located under the hood so i'll probably use that to reset it, so basicially all i do is (correct me if i'm wrong)
1. Turn key to ACC
2. put a wire to Tc and a wire AB in either DLC1 or DCL2 (in this case i'll do DLC1 simply because its away from the steering wheel)
3. Select a good ground (battery ground would be good? tell me if i'm right)
4. Take the wire from Tc and place it on the ground for a second and remove
5. Take the wire from AB and place it on the ground for a second and remove
6. Repeat step 4
7. Repeat step 5
8. Repeat step 4 but leave it to the ground until the airbag warning blinks
9. Check if the warning stays on...
....i've just went out and tried it.....no luck.....theres alot of this pink stuff over the terminals in the DLC1 (cant find DLC2) anyways, can it be that i have to remove all that pink stuff before i do it?....and do i have to use a hard wire? or any type of wire is fine? and anyone have any suggestions on where i should ground it to? (tried the bolts on the struts and the body itself...couldnt get to the negative on the battery cuz the wire was too short )
Any part on the frame of the car should be fine for the ground, usually the battery's ground has a wire that bolts to the frame.
As long as the wire is touching the contacts of DLC1, it should work. If the pink stuff is preventing the wire from touching it, then yes, you would have to remove it.
For something like this, any kind of wire would be fine. If you were making a permanent connection, and it was powering something that uses a lot of power, then you should use thick wire, but for small stuff like this, anything will really work.
ok thx Timson but i've tried so many times.... all i did was put the car on ACC...(airbag light comes on in the instrument).....plug a black wire to Tc....a yellow to AB (they are making contact with the metal in the terminals) place the black to the body for a second, remove and immediately put the yellow for a second and then back and then yellow then black and held it for a good 10seconds.....check the instrument panel light is still on.....
When i did this the first thing that i did was, while the key was not in the engine, reconnect the fuse that powers the airbag system, ECU B (I think), this was not connected for several months so that there was no power in the system at the time. The fuse box is located above and to the left of the driver's left knee. The connector on my car is located 8 inches from the fuse box, inside the car, and under the dash above the where the driver's left knee would be.
You ought to have 3 wires, one from ground the other from the two connectors. Just count like "one one thousand" switch "two one thousand" switch alternating ground to 1st connector and to 2nd connector, and keep this up for a minute or a while or so, I was not able to observe the airbag light while doing this, but it's supposed to blink quickly for a moment once the system is reset.
remove key, wait 91 seconds, insert key turn to acc, wait 7 seconds. begin alternating conn1 to ground then conn2 to ground and alternate that sequence for a minute, (you should not connect conn1 or 2 to ground for 10 seconds), and keep this sequence up for a minute or so. Think of it as trying to pull a special move on street fighter or something, you're trying to communicate with a machine so be patient.
oh damn.......i guess it wont reset......i got it to blink quickly....once i take the Tc wire off ground it'll come on again in a second or 2....guess i have to take it to the dealer to get it reset or checked.....
consider, with key out, pulling the fuses for the air bag (ecu B), AND the stereo system. leave them out for an hour (make sure you pulled the airbag fuse). reinstall the SRS fuse, leave out the radio fuse, and try resetting it. It could be the stereo system, or where the wires are physically located for the stereo that is interfering with the SRS system, that's what happened with mine (I think it was a cd-player, or cell charger or something), better rule out whether the new factor (stereo) is causing a problem,
My cynical, if not true, opinion: take it to the dealer and they are likely to charge 500 dollars to replace parts that ain't broken and the light will still be on......
By the way, how did you install the stereo? Did you cut into the car harness, or did you use a metra (or similar) connector? Did you twist and tape, or solder and heat-shrink? I suspect that the airbag computer is extremely sensitive to nearby arcing.
where is ECU B and the stereo fuse located?..anyways i dont think it'll cost $500 to get the air bags resetted....if they said something is broken they can kiss my a$$! I know everything is fine with the SRS system only thing is that it needs to be resetted...
